CHAPTER 1
ENDANGERED SPECIES BIOLOGIST
YOU walk along a crowded city sidewalk on a beautiful summer day. You pass a stand where a man is selling soft drinks and hot pretzels that smell delicious. Up ahead, you see the double doors that lead into the research lab where you’ll be meeting new coworkers. A surge of excitement runs through you.
You are an endangered species biologist, and it’s your first day on the job. You will be working to restore endangered species. You’re about to join a team made up of some of the best scientists in the business.
One of these scientists greets you in the lobby. She has dark hair piled up in a neat bun and a warm smile. She introduces herself as Dr. Moua.
But you can call me Alana,
she says. We’ll be working together. Let me show you around.
As she shakes your hand, you notice that her earrings are tiny enamel frogs.
Alana shows you around a zoo with cheetahs, lions, black-footed ferrets, and other animals. You also get to see a lab and a library. Then you make your way to a conference room to meet the rest of the team. Everyone takes a seat. The leader of the team, Dr. Jones, tells you about its mission. The team has projects all over the world studying species diversity and conservation. The researchers make recommendations to better protect and support species.
Dr. Jones describes three projects that need help right now. In the first project, you would be facing off against elephant poachers in Myanmar. The second involves reintroducing a type of desert antelope called the scimitar-horned oryx into
