    CHAPTER 1

    THE END OF THE WORLD?

San Francisco in the early 1900s was known as the Paris of America. It was famous for its culture and industry. The city was the ninth largest in the United States and the most important city on the west coast.

Everything in San Francisco was big—from the Palace Hotel to City Hall. Its largest department store was called the Emporium. San Francisco’s Chinatown area was the most crowded of any outside of Asia. The United States Mint, where gold was kept and money was printed, had one-third of the country’s gold supplies.

When it opened in 1875, the Palace Hotel became one of the grandest features of downtown San Francisco.

By 1906, more than 400,000 people lived in San Francisco. They thought of their city as the most beautiful in the world. It had a lively theater and opera scene. The Grand Opera House could hold more than 2,800 people.

The night of April 17, 1906, is a typical cool and clear San Francisco evening. Opera fans are wowed by a magical performance by famous singer Enrico Caruso. Afterward, some go for a walk to enjoy the lovely evening.

From the top of Telegraph Hill, a person can see most of the beautifully lit city. As each person goes to bed, nobody imagines that their happy lives will soon be interrupted by something terrible.

Before the sun rises on April 18, the city is shaken violently. People sleeping peacefully are violently thrown from their beds and knocked against walls. Buildings collapse across the city, spilling broken bricks, glass, and wood into the streets. The roads split open, and thick smoke fills the air. Hundreds of people are hurt, or worse.

During the night you had great dreams, but now you’re living in a nightmare. You’re lucky to be alive. For now, at least. But your ordeal is just beginning. Will
