A group of six young miners are exploring Asteroid AX245 to find the mineral ixonium. It is the most valuable substance in the galaxy and is used to power interstellar travel. The group splits into three teams to explore some tunnels in the asteroid’s surface. But just before one team begins digging into the rock, they receive an urgent message. The other team reports seeing a black, gooey substance oozing out of the rock. Their report is cut off by their loud screams—and then total silence. What happened to Team Gamma? Every summer when I was growing up, I visited my Aunt Ann and cousins in far northern Minnesota. They lived among the mining dumps–gigantic hills of ore that were dug out of the ground. One night, my aunt saw strange lights up in those hills. The next day, two strange men wearing all black walked into the hardware store where she worked. My aunt asked where they had parked, since she hadn’t seen them drive up in a car. They said, Our conveyance is without.

Those words always spooked me when she told that story. Her experience happened many years before anyone had heard about Men in Black. Did she have an alien encounter? Was their vehicle really a UFO that landed in the mining dumps? I don’t know how
