    CHAPTER 1

    PRESSURE BUILDING

    This way, says the young woman.

    She leads you down a series of hallways at a brisk pace. You’ve just arrived by helicopter to the United States Geological Survey in Virginia. Everyone here looks deadly serious. The woman leads you into a conference room. People are seated around a long oval table. They stand as you enter the room.

    Hello, doctor, says a man in his late 50s. He introduces himself as Dr. Henderson, the director of the USGS.

    The United States Geological Survey (USGS) headquarters is located in Reston, Virginia. Scientists at the USGS study the Earth’s natural processes to better understand them and to warn people about possible danger.

    You smile and nod. I’m not a doctor yet, you remind him. You’re actually a student, working on your doctorate in seismology.

    Of course, he says. But that doesn’t matter right now. We understand that when it comes to the latest research, you’re the expert.

    You can’t help but feel proud. Your research on earthquakes and creating models that predict volcanic activity has made waves in your field. You don’t like to brag, but nobody else is better at discovering where and when a volcano might erupt.

    A woman stands and gestures for you to take a seat at the table.

    Welcome. I’m Dr. Brooks, the head of research here at the USGS, she says. We’ve been seeing an alarming level of seismic activity. It seems like a volcanic eruption, or series of eruptions, could be coming, she says.
