"Come closer, and I'll show you," he said and winked at her.

"Just admit you ran out of good reasons," Melissa said and giggled. He couldn’t really mean what he’d just said. Could he?

"Some things are easier to understand by experiencing them."

She leaned closer. "Okay, give me your best shot."

"It's easier without the table between us."

"Giving up already?" Melissa teased him.

"I can't have you thinking me a coward for the rest of the year, no."

"For the next two years at the very least. This year's nearly over."

"I better make it good then," Devlin said.

He got up from his chair and held his hand out to her. Without hesitation, she placed her hand in his and moved toward him. Standing close to him, she realised that her eyes only reached his shoulders. She looked at his lips and wondered when he would start kissing her.

It should have turned her off. Kissing the boss. But right now he was only a man. A man she wanted to touch and get as close as possible. A warm body she wanted to feel against hers.

Melissa opened her mouth at the unexpected gasp he’d caused. She was surprised, glancing into his warm eyes. She saw more than just a need to prove himself. More than just winning a bet. She tilted her head backwards, aiming her lips in his direction. Hoping he would see the invitation for what it was. An urgent need to feel him. A desire to have him kiss her. Maybe stop the world from turning for a moment.

He leaned closer. Before she managed to prepare herself, she felt his warm lips against hers. Kissing her softly. A flush of warmth engulfed her. She slid her arms around his shoulders and held on as he groaned. She decided he wasn't averse to prolonging the kiss.

She worried he would feel content with just a brief touch between them. Content or maybe even revolted when she answered his call. Revulsion would have been a humiliating result. Would it be better if he felt nothing at all?

But judging from the way he wrapped his arms around her and deepened the kiss, it seemed he enjoyed it as much as she did. She held on to him. Nibbling at her lower lip, he used his tongue to explore. She tasted coffee on his lips and tongue. It tasted better than from the cup. She hoped the same applied to her taste. Hoping he wouldn't be turned off by anything she did.

Eventually, the kiss ended. But they still maintained the embrace. Melissa listened to Devlin's breaths before resting her cheek against his chest. His heart was beating fast. No words were spoken. Maybe he was as shaken as she was. She was afraid to say anything. Afraid to break the spell and ruin the perfect moment.

"Wow," Devlin finally said hoarsely. "That was... Wow...."

She grinned into his shirt and couldn't prevent the chuckle she made. "You win," Melissa admitted.

"Where do you want me?" Devlin asked.
