General Notation Overview
Representative of the notation used on all cubes unless otherwise noted.
Throughout the book I use common abbreviations of cube names such as simply noting 3x3 to represent the 3x3x3. I will never use 3x3 to denote the 3x3x5. These changes run with the consciousness of the text and should not be off putting.
The terms face and layer may be used interchangeably at times and in other forms they are used for specification of the configuration of a single cube in a layer. Such as if you are maneuvering a corner piece that has three sides consisting of three colors and one of these colors is white. And for your purposes you need to track the white side of this corner. You may find that this cube is in the front layer, however, the white side of this corner faces right (right face), meaning that yes this cube is in the front layer but the side that we are looking for (white) is not in the front face. In such a situation layer and face are not interchangeable. This corner lies in the front layer, right face. But because the colored face does not separate from the layer when turned, in most cases the words are used interchangeably unless otherwise specified.
