      THE DAY AFTER ANZAC DAY

      The sun is coming up

      And it’s Turkey

      We are in

      No roosters

      This morning

      To get you out of bed

      Just gunfire

      That makes you feel

      Like your heart is being invaded

      Like when Mum cried

      The sounds here

      Are like her tears

      They’ll gut you before the day has

      Even started

      If you don’t put it out

      Of your mind

      My mouth has been dry

      For as long as I can remember

      Not even a bucket of water

      Can fix it

      And every time I reach for my tobacco

      I feel my heart

      Like gunfire in my ribs

      I’m going to die

      Today

      And if I don’t
