About this ebook

A metaphor for a life well lived, author Rebecca Meredith’s story takes place in the healing process after a great loss—the kind many have experienced: that of her mother six years ago on Mother’s Day weekend. Losing her wasn’t the final straw—more like the only straw. In Lessons in Life, Meredith shares a collection of life sayings, quotes, and essays from the heart accented with colorful photos taken along the Gulf Island National Seashore in Florida. The selections address a variety of subjects from time, to healing, and to forgiveness, offering both comfort and advice. Lessons in Life gives insight into grief and its aftermath. It encourages you to learn to face the adversity, get up off the ground, and continue toward healing and success. Meredith, through her personal experiences, discusses the importance of showing up and playing the game of life well.

    Prologue

Y ou could tell a story straight through. It wouldn’t be complicated, but it wouldn’t be interesting, either. There’s a lot of water under the bridge of life. I’m fifty-eight and learning that I still have a lot to learn. Life’s not so much about what happens, but about our reaction to what happens. We’ve all survived difficult situations, and some of them may have altered us. But respect your decisions, because they’ve kept you alive.

It’s December and nearing Christmas on the Gulf. I love photography, and am blessed to be living twelve miles from paradise. Each amber sunset reminds me how precious and fleeting life is. I’m amazed every time I gaze through a lens. Life’s like a camera. We focus on the positive, develop the negative, and if it doesn’t work out, we take another shot. It isn’t easy recollecting memories, images, and feelings that run deep and into the quick. Story writing is just like that.

A metaphor for a life well lived, my story takes place in the healing process after a great loss, the kind that we’ve all experienced. I lost my precious mother six years ago on Mother’s Day weekend. Losing her wasn’t the final straw—more like the only straw. With grieving, there’s not a how to manual; rather it’s a process of moving on. I’m not writing this book to step on any toes, but instead to illustrate one of life’s greatest lessons. We all need to learn to face adversity, get up off the ground, and continue on toward success. On the proverbial playing field of life, what counts is not so much
