It is a deep part of being human, thinking through problems and solutions, leading each person to his or her philosophy in life. See how all societies with their different cultural norms, values and beliefs, knowingly or unknowingly are influenced by each other. Foreword

What we think about ourselves and our surrounding, very much depends upon our beliefs. Our deep-rooted thoughts are what make us. In this book, Shri Patel has provided us a biopsy result of this belief system. He starts with the explanation of what is life and then logically develops a theme to explain our intellectual and spiritual insight. He also tells us how our brain, mind and thought process works. His explanation is very much like a computer engineer explaining hardware, software and programming. Author also shows us the impact of the belief system on our theology, our religious tradition and cultural landmarks. His vast knowledge and experience of treating patients with complementary medicine is quite evident here. Once we know how to modify our belief system, we can swing from a negative outlook to a positive outlook which is very essential for success. Ultimately it is the attitude that guides our success and happiness. One could not be very happy in the mundane world unless he is happy inside.

Neuroscience has developed so fast that our understanding of human brain is changing every day. Neuro-chemistry, neuro-physiology and electro-physiology of human brain are some of the subsets of this growing science. In-spite of these great achievements we are few steps behind the wisdom of ancient sages who have studied mind, human psychology and spirituality through self-experience and meditation. I believe in this excellent book, Biopsy of Beliefs, Author is methodically explaining the structure and function of the human belief system, ultimately leading to the process of transforming the belief system into a positive life force. He has provided a key that will open the vast field of inner mind, where the consciousness meets the field of subconscious. When they join hands on the floor of logic and faith, dance of the divine will begin and the flow of the cosmos will dance within us. I certainly enjoyed this book and hope you will enjoy it too. His goal is to teach and make us happy by transforming our belief system. Love is to break the boundary of ego and the author wants us to see this open sky of non- duality with love and joy.

As I welcome this thought provoking book let me end with a quote from an ancient text of Upanishad ((Brihad-Arayanka 4.4.45) :

"Our deep driving desire makes us, who we are.

Desire drives our will. As our will, so is our deed.

It’s our deed that brings our destiny!"

    Introduction

Life is all about relationships not only with all living objects but with one’s own inner self; mind, sensory organs and core of our spiritual system. Life is also related to the food we eat, the liquids we take in, clothes we wear, our houses, cars, and our belongings, etc. Every thought we think, every feeling we express, every word we speak goes out in to the atmosphere to either heal or harm. Every human society has its own particular culture or sociocultural system. An individual’s attitudes, values, ideals and beliefs are greatly influenced by the culture or cultures in which someone lives. It played a crucial role in human evolution allowing human beings to adapt the environment to their own purposes rather than depend solely on natural selection to achieve adaptive success. The real problem lies in our ways of thinking, our inherent beliefs and thoughts which make up our deep rooted mind sets. We all have the ability to change our mind-set, and therefore our core inner beliefs upon which we base our view about ourselves and the world.

Belief systems grow with us, but are not with us at birth. These are conditioned memories of experiences that are lodged in the unconscious mind, which is 95% of our mind. According to cognitive neuroscientists, we are only conscious of 5 percent of our cognitive activity so most of our decisions, actions, emotions and behavior depend on brain activity that goes beyond our conscious awareness. Our action depends on attitude; our action is just a demonstration of our perception and our belief. Generally attitude is broken into two constructs; positive and negative. The positive attitude means that a person interprets life with a glass half full mentality while the negative attitude means that a person interprets life with a glass half empty mentality. We do not think on what we are doing with awareness. We can think before we act or react because our awareness controls the three levels: belief, perception and attitude. (Look before you leap, think before you speak.) At one basic level the brain processes events in time and space, so we can share a common reality, but as soon as we dig one step deeper, we find
