    THE MASTER VOICE

    By Amandeep Thind

It was April 1986 when I moved from a local primary school to an English medium school.

As I grew up in a one-room house in Kolkata, among the utmost poverty in India, my parents had this belief that their kids must get educated in an English medium school so that they could have a better living. Moreover, in a country like India, English medium education has always been given much more weight than any other local school or language.

My father used to drive a taxi for a living. By this means, he did not have enough funds to afford my education, and they had to go beyond their means to secure my education.

Besides all the financial hardship my family was facing, they were determined to admit me to this newly opened English medium school in my area. They knew that they'd have massive challenges paying my school fees every month. However, they thought that if they would sacrifice their little comforts and save some money through different means, they would be able to afford it. Fortunately, they managed to arrange the funds for my school fees. And they were also able to get some help from our neighbours from time-to-time to support my education.

When I was nine, my parents moved me to a private school. In my memories, I had moved from a tiny school compound to an enormous education complex. I felt lost in that vast space. For nine years old, this is quite a frightening experience to step into this new and strange environment. At the same time, I can't help but notice my school mate were from the much better-off family background as there was a parade of expensive and fancier lunch boxes, water bottle and school bags each day compare to what my simple kits.

The day when I first enter the school gate left me an odd feeling of not belonging.

I was terrified and wished my parent will come and take me back to my previous school.

I vividly recalled hearing English poem sung in chorus during the school assembly. I have no clue what they were singing as I do not understand a word of the English language, so I pretend to hum along with the tune hoping no one will find out.

The teacher ushered my classmate and me into the classroom after the assembly. I deliberately choose a back seat in the hope that no one will notice me and talk to me. The teacher saw me as the newcomer and told me to stand from his hand gesture. He started asking me some question and assumed that I understand the language.

I do not understand what he was asking me, so all I could mutter was a simple 'Yes' to whatever question that was from him.

My whole world caved in when I heard the entire class burst out in laughter, laughing at me.

I also heard the comment from the classmate sitting two benches away saying in Hindi: This fat boy knows nothing ( Ish motte ko kuch nahi aata").

Yes, I was that poor and overweight nine years old. What makes it worst was I was born from an inter-caste marriage which was a sneer upon in my country when two parties from different cast engaged in marriage. I was the products of that shame and rejection.

I almost burst into tear from this humiliation.

I wanted to run out of the classroom, run home to my mother and beg her to take me out of this school that have humiliated me.

This daunting experience in my childhood inked in my mind that I should never speak up in public.

I became a quiet and reserved child after this incident. I will keep to myself and refrained from expressing any opinion in front of anyone. Speaking in public frightens me more than anything and continue to haunt me for a long time.

There is a secret desire in me to speak onstage during school function, but I will never put up my hand to volunteer when the school teacher ask for a volunteer.

As time goes, I felt that I became invisible and non-existence in school.

Deep down, I had a voice that wanted to share its feelings, perspectives on how I saw life, and the wisdom I have had inside me. I always thought it was my fault for not being able to communicate my feelings. My real authentic voice got trapped in my body.

My parents had many hardships managing us (me and my sister) and giving us the best possible future. Because of the financial difficulties, my mom would buy all the left-out vegetables from the market, as they used to be cheap compared to buying the fresh bunch. For that reason, our neighbours started making fun of it. I think she felt humiliated. She was also misunderstood as a mistress to my father, who is from the villages of Punjab and had a certain notion of how men should be in a relationship.

Later in life, I had some conversation with my mom and found out she was depressed and considered suicide during that dark period. She was often angry and became violent and abusive toward my sibling and me when she loses control. On many occasion, we were locked up in a small room and got beaten up by her. She would not listen to any reasoning when she is at that stage of mind. I believed deep in her; she regretted and felt the shame that she lost control over her temper and inflicted her children with pain.

I developed a negative belief in me through this childhood dark day that I was always at fault what something terrible happens to me.

For many years, I thought it was my fault for not able to convey my message across to others.

I isolated myself and shut myself off for many years due to my childhood experience of being blamed for everything. At that point, I never had an opinion about anything. It seemed like decisions were always made for me. I almost ended up believing that being poor; I could never be right. I didn't have an opinion, nor could I have a voice for anything.

However, there was a desire deep inside, which felt different. There was a voice inside which felt the need to be heard; there was a voice within me that wanted to be recognise.

In 2006, when I was working in a call centre (as I couldn't get a job anywhere else). I was blessed with an opportunity to come to London under a scholarship with the help of my cousin. Things started shifting for me. I got into Personal Development through books that were introduced to me in 2003 back when I was in Delhi. It helped me to improve and I kept attending training on specialized education even while I was in the UK. During that phase of learning, I attended a very powerful training course on breaking my limiting beliefs in London in 2007.

It was because of this training that I realized my voice is worthy of being heard by others. That my feelings and opinions matter, irrespective of my background, skin colour, or origin. I had a breakthrough in this training course. Then I went on a journey to craft my voice so that it could be heard on more prominent platforms. I made an informed decision to challenge one of the biggest fears of having a voice in public. With help from my mentor, I overcame that fear when I decided to speak in public.

It's been more than a decade now. I have represented some big names in the speaking industry like Tony Robbins and Success Resources. Then I decided to share this gift with my students as I realized speaking in public is a skill that can be learned, transferred, duplicated, and sustained just the way I learned it from my mentor.

I realized, for most people to speak in public remains a desire for life and never becomes a reality as people have an immense fear of rejection from others. Most people who have a fear of public speaking have a built-in fear of rejection. Most people feel they will be humiliated and embarrassed if people don't like what they have to share. So, the first lesson I learned to overcome public speaking fear was to understand that no rejection is ever personal. We are the one that make it personal, but we need to accept and understand that they are only telling us that our speech was not persuasive enough for them to learn from. If the audience felt they are unable to benefit from the sharing of information, they will not give you their attention. Most people will listen when it comes to their personal benefit. Getting attention from a group is an art that can be learned. I experientially teach this to my students during my public speaking classes. Most of my student, once master the simple technique will find that they not only gain the trust but the attention of the audience.

The second realization I had about public speaking is that I had to be a performer to speak in public. But when I realized, through the help of my mentor, that it's not a performance at all, most effective Public Speakers are great teachers of Specialized Education. Education has nothing to do with performance, but most people feel that way when they have to go up on stage. By the way, going up on stage or in front of any group is an immense leverage for life, which can create great wealth. I teach my students how to leverage their time via public speaking and creating a life by design while monetizing their knowledge/life experiences.

In fact, this book you're holding in your hand came to fruition as I wanted my students to become authors. This way, one who becomes an author can project as an authority. Public speaking is also just a conversation, it gives you peace in your heart to share your message. Of course, it's not a conversation that I will have with my dad over the dinner table or with my wife in the living room. It's definitely a planned, high-level structured conversation, but it's still only a conversation.

My third and biggest realization on the Challenge of Public Speaking is that people just want to get famous and popular. This hollow mindset and approach will lead you to nowhere in Public speaking space. When you are implementing your new learnings, you realize the depth of those teachings, and when you go deeper, you can take your students or attendees deeper with you on an incredible learning journey. You can liken this to performing a surgical implant in the brains of your students without doing a physical surgery. It's like knowing your topic or niche at a depth that you are the expert on that topic. You can only speak on a topic when you know it at an experiential level. This become your second skin and topic subject is interweaved into you.

When you travel the journey of being a master of your craft, you make a massive difference in the life of your students. They will connect with you at a higher level, and you also will be rewarded financially For me, teaching is not something I do on the side; it's my life. I was also not a bright student during my school and college years, but I figured out a process for anyone to have a voice in public, and that's what I am great at. It's not something I learned in a classroom and its theory is tested and tried while doing it. I am blessed to have done more than 500+ training workshops in over 20+ countries on three different continents from a group size as small as 5 to 5,000. I am on a mission to create effective teaching method so that the lessons can be simplified and understood by everyone. It brings not only change for the students, but also a transformation for their life through specialized education.

I have done more than 500+ workshops in 10 years offline and online and generated over a few million in revenue for companies and myself. It doesn't require any talent, as most people know how to speak, it's just that they don't know how to speak in the public. From that day onward, I take the background and let my students have the spotlight. I now teach my students how to have a voice in public and monetize that voice by presenting how others would invest with them.
