    What is Life?

Life is a journey. Insects, animals and other life forms also live. Is their life successful? No! This is the difference between animals and humans. How you beautify your life, set your goals, decide your way of doing work or think to do something great—all these are part of your life operations. In this book, you would read many examples and anecdotes that would motivate you to be successful.

Albert Einstein used to have a single soap for bathing, washing and shaving. One of his friends asked him the reason, so Einstein replied, Too simple! There are already many complications in life. If I think about them, I’ll have to use different soaps for different purposes.

If you do not have the right attitude, towards life, then you haven’t lived it. A common man imagines that he would live in peace. He wants to have good education, good job, beautiful wife and a place to dwell. However, every one doesn’t get everything. One has to work to get something and people do not want to do it. They only want shortcuts in life and then they regret. We are living like this. It is true that every common man will say the same because he hasn’t understood the meaning of life. There’s hardly a person who says, I am happy and enjoying my life. I earn what I want through hard work. Someone has rightly said, Life is like an unending festival for a hardworking person.

We should have interest in life. Who escapes problems in life? The real joy is to win over these problems. No problem is eternal. It only scares and examines our patience. When we are ill, there is no use of being afraid; we have to be treated patiently and take medicine. Nothing can be achieved without overcoming difficulties.

Swet Marden has said, Our aim is to have our life full of enjoyment. However, it doesn’t happen itself. We will have to work to achieve our goals. Nothing can be achieved by merely thinking. A little laziness can be harmful to you. Someone has said, To have disciplined life is like winning laziness. So, one should be very careful about one’s life to succeed.

Socrates says, A good life is a mixture of knowledge and emotions and wisdom and difficulties. It means we should have true intentions and we have to spread knowledge. Then, our minds will support us and we will have beauty in life.

There are many people in society who would not be happy upon seeing your progress. Hence, they would create hurdles in your life because they have lost the meaning of their own life. Remember, there would be injuries in the war and stumbling blocks in the path but we have to proceed. One should have enough dedication to win.

The famous Hindi poetess, Mahadevi Verma, says, Life is living, not ending. It is improvement, not deterioration. Enlightening the life with the lamp of darkness is called Life. There is no growth without continuous rigidity and no shape without rigid structure. Both our actions and reactions are for life.

One can have a beautiful life if one serves with commitment and can obtain satisfaction in it. Telling lies and deceiving for one’s selfish gain is not good as one is playing a game in which one would be caught soon. The one, who lives one’s life truthfully, works with commitment and make sacrifice to love others, enjoys his life. That’s why Walter Scott has said, One hour of busy life is far better than a life of idle time.

    Flow of Life

What is life? Is life like a flow of river? This idea came into my mind because Kaka Kalelkar given the title Jeevan Leela to his book (associated with Indian cultures). I read the book to know the reason behind it. I thought that the way in which he has enhanced his knowledge and considered this point, should be the point of focus of everyone’s mind. Kaka was a famous Gandhian philosopher and Gandhi inspired his thoughts. However, he emerged in Jeevan Leela as a person who was a deep thinker of Indian traditions.

Kaka has written: Sitting around the river during morning and evening brings different thoughts to one’s mind. Sand is always there but every particle is linked with water or air. Where does this sand come from? Where does it go? There are marks in the sand when someone walks on it. However, when wind blows, there are no signs. A river flows between two banks and never stops. Sun, moon and stars move to the west to take rest and the water also takes rest in the night. Everyone needs rest. Then I saw, water doesn’t need rest. It is always in motion.

One can think where does this river come from and where does it go? Is this a thought or a question? A river should have a beginning and an ending. Whenever we see a river, we raise this question. It strikes our mind all the time and deepens our thoughts. At last, one inspires oneself and starts working. To find beginning and ending is possible by observing the river. European poet and writer Mathew Arnold calls life a River.

Human life is like an ever-flowing river—from human to society, society to culture, culture to country, country to humanity and humanity to universe. We understand others’ feelings through language and then, understand the whole world.

The cycle of life and river is the same. River always flows between the banks, progresses and finally, joins the sea. However, it doesn’t end; rather, it always moves. Life has a similar cycle. Can we understand the life though it (the river)?

Kaka has ended his words with the last question. It is true. Life cycle is like river cycle. There are many positive and negative incidents in one’s life. However, river never stops. It doesn’t bother about dams, mountains etc. and continuously proceeds forward. Why don’t we do the same, like the river? It is because we do not use our true potential and are not aware of it. River’s power is its speed. All the hurdles in the path increase its speed. Have you seen it shouting loud on mountains that stop it from moving forward? Then, it proceeds quietly. Observe the Ganges and Yamuna. If there is any mountain in front of them, these rivers jump from hundreds of feet across and find their way. The mountain is stationary. A passenger must move towards his destination. I wish we could learn from these rivers. We should push all the problems backwards and move forward. Destination will be ours. This is the rule of movement. The one, who is in motion, is living and reaches one’s destination.

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore has written: Human life is like river that finds its way through its flow. We should think about it. According to Jawaharlal Nehru, Life is to improve and not to remain still. Continuous improvement does not allow one to remain stagnant. The river has been called First Passenger of Nature. Then, why should one be afraid of problems? The importance of life is to win over difficulties and progress all the time.

    Life is a School

Life is a school. You might have been feeling different after reading this sentence because people, especially the youth, consider it a bogus lecture. After hearing this sentence, one thinks that life is a burden on us. People like to hear what they want to hear. They come at night and you say nothing. They spend their whole day with friends and you say nothing. A young man fails in a competitive examination and so, he says, I was struggling hard but failed. The good thing is that he believes that he had studied hard but there was some discrepancy in the checking. Or, he will say that someone with reference power might have been selected for a job. Such youth lose all opportunities. When a young boy gets married, his responsibilities towards his family increases manifold. He loses all his dreams. He understands the truth of his answer sheets (by examiners) and starts living in turmoil. It all happens because he always thought that he was right. So, when we says that life is a school, he considers it a lecture! However, the truth is that life is a school. He learns from it and passes. Those, who do not learn from life, always fail. Everyday we encounter some problems. So, we have some outcome, it is part of school. he need is to concentrate on problems and learn from them. Famous philosopher Franklin has said, Write your diary everyday. Write what you have done today. How did you spend your day? You might not like it but just do it once by focusing on it. Read the diary twice the next day and calculate the utilization of time. You have only 24 hours in a day. And every day spent never comes back. People think that there is so much time but they forget that it is not true. A day passes and life shortens by one day! You were 25 earlier. Now, you are 26 years old. If you calculate all the time you have spent, you will come to know that it is there in front of you like a mirror, presenting your image. This is the moment when you can improve, otherwise it is too difficult.

Someone has said, The most precious thing for a human being is time. If he learns to spend, he can buy success. It is true that those, who have understood the meaning of time, have utilized it and succeeded. History is full of such people.

There are many examples that tell us how people have achieved success by utilizing their time. Some people oppose the concepts. However, those, who have proved themselves, were like you. They didn’t have any facilities. Longfellow was a writer who utilized his time wisely. The time he spent in boiling water for tea, was used in writing Inferlo. Mozart wrote Racuum on his deathbed. The US mathematician, Charles I, didn’t know mathematics but he became a great mathematician by the dint of hard work and practice. A geography expert, Erigme, also did the same. He used to bind books in a bookshop. He used to study at night in the street; and he became very famous due to hard work.

There are many more examples that prove that one can succeed in life by utilizing one’s time. Learning the value of time is important. Some one has written: Time is more precious than silver or gold. However, the problem is that people waste it like the cheapest article. Time can never be brought back. One can have gold back after sometime but can never buy time. So, utilize your time very well. You make budget for your money. Similarly, you need to have a budget for your time too. Just develop this habit and you will see that you will be successful.

    Life is a Dedicated Contract

A builder was standing on the signal in search of labourers. A labourer passed by at that time. The builder stopped him and asked, Would you work for wages? The labourer said, Rs. 2. The builder replied, OK! Go and dig the ground. After some time, another labourer passed by. He asked for Rs. 5. Builder sent him to dig coalmines. The third one asked for Rs. 10 and the builder sent him to diamond mines. The builder paid the labourers in the evening. The first one said, I dug 100 buckets of mud. The second one said, I brought 10 quintals of coal from the coal mine. The third one said, 1 found a diamond. The builder paid them according to their jobs. The first labourer said, I can’t feed my family with this little amount. The second one said, I can save nothing with this money. The builder said, It’s not my fault. You got the job as per your demands. I didn’t dissuade you from asking for money or work.

Our life is like that of a contractor. Whatever we ask, we get. We get so much from life but don’t realize this fact. You cannot buy them since they are free of cost. Whatever we get from life has no marked price—love, purity, mental peace etc. are priceless. However, it does not mean that one can get them without making any contribution. In fact, if we have to gain something, we must give something. However, the sad part is that a person wants to have something but does not want to pay for it, or he would not work for it. He wants to get results or rewards without doing hard work; passing in examinations, getting a job, getting profit in business etc. are the examples in this context. This is modern culture being adopted by the youth. Their aim is to reach success swiftly without working hard for it.

Have you ever thought what true love is? A person, who does not understand others, cannot know about their feelings and emotions. Whatever he gives, he receives. Love is free but you have to give love in return.

You will have to inculcate positive thoughts to pure your soul. They are to be protected from envy, anger, revenge etc. Self-gain, greed etc. are the evils one must avoid. The worst enemy of man is his ego.

A person approached a saint. The person wanted to pay money to the saint. However, the saint demanded something that was worthless. The person went in search of a worthless thing. He saw the earth and tried to pick a handful of it. The earth
