FOREWORD
Dr. Jessie Broussard
Project Director, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Student Support Services Veterans Program & Louis Stokes Louisiana Alliance for Minority Participation Program
Amazing, interesting, inspirational, and provides knowledge for every corner of our lives whether we admit it aloud or not. Hats off to Clifton Roy Jr., for combining counseling, teachable moments and critical thinking into a vivid understanding of our development. This book creates a pathway for adolescents and adults alike to analyze the why, and how we got to be who we are and how we can theoretically engineer our own success with the use of that data.
When I initially received a copy of the manuscript, I read the first seventy-seven pages within thirty minutes. It was so relevant to life. I could not stop reading. As I have worked with higher education students many of whom are military services connected. Each page I read had a connection to a life that I have touched. This author is on to something worthy of trailblazing quality.
As I carefully read Mr. Roy’s book, I thought about the significance of this process to colleges which have a mission to help students find themselves and grow into productive adults. Instantly, I thought of the education system. There is an excessive need for students to Get Back Up
as they embark on their journey to complete college as they may fall many times along the way to the first step towards their destiny. This is an approach that can help students transition from high school to college, from military to college and in dealing with their own life situations outside of academia. This process can assist them in learning as well as how to be successful in college and in their personal lives. In addition, it could be helpful to first generation college students, the first in their families to attend college (mom or dad does not have a 4-year degree) and those students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.
Many education institutions can benefit from this pathway message in Get Back Up: The First Step Towards Your Destiny
. Moreover, it would also fit well in the penal systems, where many have lost their way. Get Back Up… The first step to your destiny
is in fact the goal of the prison system to help inmates rehabilitate, get back up
. However, the correction facilities are not equipped with programs that provide prisoners with a plan to self-reflect on their situation. By using the profound stories in this book, they can ultimately find out who they are and how they got to where they are.
As you read this book you will come to understand why the author felt qualified to write this book. In many ways it reflects his life. I was chosen to write this foreword for many reasons, and conversations that he and I have shared over the years. He is my nephew. The main reasons are because I know where he came from, I know where he has been, and I see the changes he has made. I was honored when he asked me to review his book and do a foreword. I am proud of you Clifton Roy Jr. and excited to be a part of your life and your life’s work.

God’s Timing
Since the beginning of the year I knew Cliff was working hard on his book, page by page and month by month chomping away at the bit. One thing I could have never imagined would be the fact he would finish writing the last words of this book at the same time my grandmother would make her transition into the afterlife. As my business partner and friend, he couldn’t wait to let me see his completed manuscript and probe my brain for ideas. He could not have known how much I would need this very work in the darkest, lowest and most painful time in my life. At some point in life we have all be shaken to our core by a major life altering event. Be it death, loss of a career, loss of a relationship, parent not in our lives etc. They are all forms of death, and all require us to navigate the 5 stages of grief. If you’ve ever experienced the feeling of suddenly losing something dear to you, you can relate to the deep feeling of emptiness, a sense of no direction, unsolvable pain, debilitating depression and aimless anger. It is in these dark places we find out what we’re really made of.
Les Brown states, If you have to fall, fall on your back cause if you can look up you can GET UP!
Being asked to create the preface of Get Back Up, at a time in my life where I felt my back and shoulders were in the dirt, partly contributed to my personal healing process. This introspection allowed me to see a way up and start placing one foot in front of the other in my personal life. The emotions and thoughts conjured up in writing this portion of the book, forced me to tap into deep wells of anger and sadness I was indirectly hiding from the world in my day to day dealings. I decided to take my inner demons and bare them all into the pages of this book, attempting to give the next person a hand up off the canvas.
I remember the first time my best friend tagged me on a Cliff Roy Marriage Unscripted video. I became hooked on his creative content, refreshing delivery style, and truthful nature. The more I watched, the more intrigued I became. As fate would have it, he became a mentor, business partner, and brother for life. He possesses the ability to take a complex concept and present it in a digestible package easily consumed by any person from all walks of life. His unique discernment of the bible, and the wealth of experiences he has overcome in life, makes Get Back Up spiritually potent; allowing the reader to relate, and apply the lessons right away.
I want to acknowledge Cliff
