    Prelude

Miko dropped an atomic bombshell on Elston and his family.  Samantha, Elston’s ex-fiancée is arrested and charged with the murder of Brenda Vander and while Miko is celebrating a win for her man, Elston has just learned that his sister is the real murderer.

Elston is stunned and confused about what he should do about the information Rachel drops in his lap.  However, Rachel knows her brother will not turn her in because if he does he will risk losing his freedom as well.

Elston’s conscience will have to be the deciding factor if Samantha is going to spend the rest of her life in prison for a murder his sister committed.

Samantha is hauled off to jail in handcuffs, her humiliation shows in the mugshot pose.  After getting booked, strip-searched, and having all of her belongings taken she is given an orange jumpsuit and thrown into a holding cell with other females.

    Chapter 1

Elston can’t believe what he just heard; Samantha was charged for killing Brenda Vander.  He knows it’s a lie.

Elston walks over to Rachael’s room and peeps in on her but he doesn’t let her see him, Miko are you sure it is Samantha?

Yes, all the evidence points to her, the police are on their way to pick her up now.

    Where

They are going to her job.

Elston can tell by Miko’s tone that she is happy about Samantha being charged but Elston is not.

Miko, let me call you back.

Why, what are you getting ready to do?

Miko, I will call you late, Elston hangs up the phone and walks into Rachael’s room.  Rachael, Samantha is being charged with Brenda’s murder and we both know she did not do it.

Rachael continues playing a game on her cell phone, So, what do you want me to do about it.

    Look at me, Rachael!

Rachael doesn’t look at him, Shhhh, dad is right down the hall.

Elston pleads with her, Rachael you can’t let Samantha go to prison for something she didn’t do.

Rachael hops up off her bed, It’s either you, me, or her, which one do you think should go to prison?  Samantha has been cheating on you, she doesn’t love you, I love you, and I love everyone in this family but do I ever get love back, no.  You should love me for keeping you out of jail, now get out of my room, she pushes Elston out of her room and closes the door.

Mr. Amos comes out of his room and walks down the hall past Elston, What are you two up to? Mr. Amos walks into the bathroom and closes the door.

Elston stands in the hallway confused about what to do.

Elston’s conscience will have to be the deciding factor if Samantha is going to spend the rest of her life in prison.

Meanwhile, Samantha is at work unaware of what is about to happen to her.

The police enter the Baltimore Municipal Building where Samantha works.

The police wear escorted to Samantha’s desk by her supervisor, Samantha Williamson you are under arrest for the murder of Brenda Vander. The officer reads her rights to her.

Murder, I didn’t kill anyone, this is a mistake, you have the wrong person! Samantha is not going quietly.

Her co-workers watched as the police escorted her out of the building.

January 16, 2017, it’s an unexpected seventy degrees in Baltimore and people are coming out to enjoy the nice weather including Mrs. Peggy.  She decided to do some shopping at the mall with her sisters and left her cell phone at home by mistake.

Samantha got one phone call, she called her mother with her one call and Ms. Peggy did not answer. Samantha was stuck.  She looked around at the other women in the cell with her, scared and wondering what was going to happen next."

    Mrs. Peggy got the news,

The 6pm news comes on and Mrs. Peggy and her sisters are sitting around her kitchen table eating pizza when they hear, Samantha Williamson has been arrested for the murder of Brenda Vander. A picture of Samantha’s mugshot is on the screen.

Mrs. Peggy drops her pizza on the floor, Oh my God, they have arrested my baby, Mrs. Peggy grabs her house phone to call the jail but she can’t get through, she calls a bail bondsman to see if they can help her.

Elston and his father were watching the news also and Mr. Amos is shocked, that dirty girl, she killed that woman and framed you, Elston.  Samantha was going to let you rot in prison so she could be with Davon, this was a setup.  That goddam Peggy, I got something for her ass, Mr. Amos grabs his phone.

Elston grabs his father’s arm, Dad, wait who are you calling?

Peggy, I have some words for her.

No, don’t do that, she’s going through enough right now.

My son was going to prison for something her daughter did.

Elston hears the front door close, and he jumps up to see where Rachel is going.

Rachel is getting in a blue car; Elston opens the door and runs after her, wait where are you going?

I’m eighteen, I can go where I want to go.

Elston grabs her arm, get back in the house so we can talk.

Rachel snatches away from him, get off of me, you don’t get to care about me now!

Elston looks in the car to see who’s driving, and it’s a guy who looks like he’s high, is this your boyfriend.

Elston, I’ll be back, I have to go now. Rachael and her friend pull off.

Elston was left standing and looking as they drive off.

    The next day

Twenty-four hours later Samantha is arraigned for a bail hearing, Mrs. Peggy and Samantha, and Samantha’s lawyer are hoping the judge grants her bail.

Mrs. Peggy takes a seat right behind Samantha’s lawyer Ms. Chalk.

An Officer brings Samantha into the courtroom handcuffed and wearing an orange jumpsuit.  Samantha has her head down, eyes on the floor, therefore she doesn’t notice her mother right away.

Mrs. Peggy tries to get Samantha’s attention once she takes a seat, psst, psst, I’m here for you.

After hearing her mother’s voice Samantha looks up and looks around the room.

Their eyes meet, Mrs. Peggy bursts into tears, and so does Samantha.

Samantha sees another familiar face in the courtroom, and she stares at her and then turns around to the judge.

The state’s attorney asked that bail be denied.

Ms. Chalk. is prepared to argue her case and get Samantha bail.

Ms. Chalk stands next to Samantha, Your honor my client has never broken the law and is innocent of this crime.  She is not a flight risk nor a danger to the community, and we ask that you grant her bail.

The judge sets the bail at fifty thousand dollars.

As soon as Ms. Peggy heard the bail amount she left and went straight to a bail bondsman to put her home up for Samantha’s bail.

Miko waits outside the courtroom for Ms. Chalk, in college, they had a love-hate relationship because they both liked to compete for boys and who could get the best grades but their love for each other came from being AKA’s.

Ms. Chalk walks out of the courtroom.

    Excuse me.

Ms. Chalk turns around, and smiles, well hello, long time no see.

Yes, how have you been, says Miko.

I’m great, the kids and my husband are doing wonderful, are you married yet?

Miko rolls her eyes, "No not yet, I’m too busy working my own law firm, are you still with McGregor and Howard law firm, have they made you partner yet?

"Nope, nope, I’m not a partner yet, how can I help you, Miko, because you waited for me for a reason.

Samantha Williamson, she is guilty, she killed Brenda Vander because her fiancé was fucking both of them.

Oh, and why do you care?

I don’t want to see you make a fool out of yourself., says Miko.

Ms. Chalk chuckles, Miko, I may do a lot of things but making a fool out of myself is not one of them, take care, Ms. Chalk walks off.

Six hours later Samantha is released on bail and given her belongings; Davon is waiting outside for her.

Davon rolls down the window get in.

Samantha is happy to see him, Thank God you showed up.  I would have had to walk home from this God-forsaken place.

Your mother reached out to me and asked me to pick you up; how are you doing?

Samantha looks at Davon as if he just lost his mind, how do you think I’m doing, I just got out of jail for something I didn’t do!

Davon doesn’t say anything for the rest of the ride to Samantha’s house and neither does she.

They pull up to Samantha’s house and Mrs. Peggy is standing at the door waiting.

As soon as the car stops, Samantha jumps out and runs up to the porch, hugs her mother, and breaks down crying,   This is a nightmare, I didn’t do anything.

Mrs. Peggy holds her daughter tightly, I know baby we are going to get through this, and don’t you worry.

I need to take a shower and get out of these clothes, Samantha runs upstairs to take a shower while Davon waits inside the house for her.

The water warm water is soothing as it rains down on her face and body, she can’t fight back the anger and tears, God, why is this happening to me, I didn’t do this.

Davon and Mrs. Peggy can hear her screaming from the bathroom.  Davon looks at Mrs. Peggy, I’m going to go, I’ll be back tomorrow.

She needs you, why are you leaving?

I can’t stay I need some time to process everything.

Samantha feels refreshed after her shower; however, her mind is still dazed by the day's events,.

Mrs. Peggy is in the kitchen fixing Samantha’s plate, she fixed all of her favorites, fried cube steak with smothered onions and rice.

    Where’s Davon, asks Samantha.

He left you, he left and said he need to process things.  He’s supposed to be your man and he left you, he ain’t shit either just like that Elston boy.

Mama, stop, I can’t blame him for needing to process stuff, I was just arrested for murder.

Samantha, tell me the truth were you cheating on Elston with that boy?"

    Samantha looks away.

    Tell me the truth!

Yes, off and on but I I I...

You did what!  Why would you do that, they are friends?

I loved them both but I loved Davon more because he is a family man and he reminded me of my father.  Elston wanted to work and make money he didn’t care about a family.

Why did you agree to marry him.

    Because I wanted to win.

Win, win what, Mrs. Peggy is upset, you were going to ruin your life and his life because you wanted a win?

I can’t explain it, when I found out about Brenda I got jealous and mad.

    Mad enough to kill her?

Ma, no, I would never kill anyone.

The girl is dead and you knew your fiancé was seeing her, oh yeah they see you as a suspect.

You don’t think I killed her do you?

Mrs. Peggy doesn’t say anything for a few seconds, No, no I don’t.

The next day Samantha shows up at her attorney’s office alone, she hasn’t heard from Davon.

Hello, Samantha, Ms. Chalk motions for her to have a seat.

Mrs. Chalk cuts right to the chase, "I’m going to ask you the same question three times,

    Okay, says Samantha.

    Did you kill Brenda Vander?

No, I didn’t, Samantha replies in a low tone.

    Mrs. Chalk walks
