    You’ve Been Eliminated - Ruth C. Robbins

    Chapter One

Summary of last chapter of the last book – Bobby brings the box inside and shows his parents what’s in it. It’s a VR set. Right at the same time, he gets a text message from Jason. His came with a note that said that it was from one of the other players in the game who built a VR set for a mod that he was working on. Excited, Bobby and Jason try it out.

When I opened the door, there wasn’t anyone standing outside. Ding-dong ditch? I thought. It had been a while since anyone pranked our house. That normally happened around Halloween time anyway.

Then I saw it. Sitting on the porch was a brown cardboard box with my address printed on the top. There wasn’t a return address but there a dozen postage stamps and some official-looking Post Office ink stamps on it also. I leaned down to pick it up.

    No ticking.

    And it was light.

I determined that both of these were good signs and decided to bring it inside. It wasn’t until I closed the door that I saw my name on the address. It was for me. Was this the surprise that Mom just mentioned?

I brought the box inside and shut the door.

Thanks, Mom! I heard Raz say from the living room. My brother held something in his hands that I couldn’t quite make out as I ran into the room.

I carried the box over to the couch. Yeah thanks! I said as I sat the cardboard onto my lap.

    What’s that? asked Dad.

The thing you got me. You said that you got us a little something. I held up the box. Thanks! I said enthusiastically.

What? Raz sputtered. He held up a shirt that said Big Brother on it and held up a matching shirt for me. Mom got us shirts. He turned to her. Right? Did you get Bobby something else too? He looked over at the box. Like an instruction book on how to change diapers?

She snickered. No, she said to him. Mom turned her attention to me. I didn’t get you anything else. Sorry, that’s not from me.

Well, if you didn’t send this to me, then who did? I asked.

I looked on all the sides. The box seemed perfect. Almost too perfect for having been sent in the mail.

Well? Raz sputtered. Are you going to open it, or what? We’re all dying here!

I laughed. My paranoid thinking was probably not needed. I picked at the tape on the side of the box until I could grab one end of the adhesive and ripped the whole thing open with one big swoop. I threw the tape aside like it was wrapping paper on Christmas morning.

When I lifted the flaps open, I was surprised to see a set of fancy looking controllers and big, bulky, black goggles. It’s a VR set, I said, throwing some of the paper crinkle stuffing out of the way. Someone sent me a VR set.

What? Mom said as she ran to me. Did you get this for him? she asked Dad.

He shook his head. No but this is definitely one of the top of the line brands right now. He reached in a grabbed one of the controllers. I’m actually jealous. And by that, I mean, you’re going to let me borrow this, right? he asked, kiddingly.

    I grinned. Of course. I mean, I’m pretty sure I don’t have a choice.

He laughed. Of course, you don’t. Dad plopped down on the couch next to me and elbowed me in the ribs. I’m kidding.

    I know, Dad.

Just as I was pulling out the goggles, the phone in my pocket went off. Jason’s ringtone played loud and clear.

Hello? I tried to keep my excitement down.

You got one too, didn’t you? Jason said, his voice gitty.

    A VR system? I said.

    You did get one!

Who is it from? I asked.

Mine didn’t have a return address, Jason said. Maybe it’s from Rei. I think her family’s rich.

I dug into the stuffing to try and find a card or a note but came up with nothing. Maybe, I said. Have you talked to her yet?

No, he said. I called you first. Have you tried it out yet?

Naw, I don’t even know what games to play.

Jason laughed. You haven’t checked your email then, have you?

My email? I repeated. I looked over at Dad, who shrugged.

He took the box from me and motioned toward the staircase. I quickly ran up to my room. The glow from my computer screen illuminated the dark bedroom in a blue haze until I flipped the light switch on. A notification waited for me on my computer monitor.

What is it? I asked Jason.

Just click on it, he said. I could see the smile over the phone as his voice squeaked in excitement.

My chair whined as I sat down. I set my phone down on my desk and pressed my speakerphone button before I took the mouse in my hand. I moved the cursor over to the email notification.

Dear Screaming_Wombat, I read aloud. I would like to offer you the wonderful opportunity to beta test a mod created for Fortnite, a game which you have proven to be quite familiar with. In addition to this mod (entitled, Save the World) I have taken it upon myself to send you a virtual reality package. This package includes a VR headset and two handheld controllers.

Dad appeared in the room next to me. I hadn’t even heard him walk in. He set the box down next to my computer chair. Someone made a mod for Fortnite already? he said.

Is that bad? I asked. What’s a mod?

A mod, he said. "is short for modification. Fortnite is a pretty basic game. You are placed on an island where you have to be the last person standing. Sometimes you’re
