      Captain Caren Fielding stood on the bridge of USL Odyssey , a Universal Star League deep space exploratory vessel.

      Her ship. Her bridge. Her responsibility.

      She presented herself to her crew as an exemplary USL officer should: spotless blue and silver uniform, dark hair pulled into a tight knot at the base of her neck, face calm, controlled.

      Everything regulation. Everything by the book.

      Everything except the phantom stink of blood and human waste.

      She controlled a grimace, refused to acknowledge the bile rising in her throat. The odor was a delusion. She knew it. The cleaning bots had worked through the night, removing all trace of the bodies that had exploded on her watch yesterday.

      Blake’s body.

      Momentarily closing her eyes, she drew a deep breath, forcing herself to catalog the room’s actual scents. Harsh chemical cleaning compounds stung her nostrils, overlaid with a clean, salty tang someone had named ocean breeze. Caren had never been near an ocean — neither had anyone else on this vessel—so she had no idea if the scent was accurate, but at least it wasn’t
