Jim raced through the corridors, boots drumming a staccato beat against the metal floor plates. Sweat plastered the syntho-shirt to his back, his heart pounded louder than the ship’s old engines, and his breath came in whistling gasps, but he couldn’t stop. Couldn’t even slow down. His family’s survival depended on the outcome of the next few minutes.
Without breaking stride he leapt across a rusted floor panel and then ducked under a sagging I-beam. The ship was overdue for space-dock and major repairs. Way overdue. But Jim knew every nook and cranny, every buckling joint. He’d grown to manhood on the Quantum Caravan and he didn’t intend to lose her to space pirates now.
Unerring instinct pulled him to a stop before an entry hatch identical to every other hatch on this level. He hadn’t bothered to count panels, hadn’t paid attention to corridor sections, he simply knew this was the hatch he needed. Just like he knew that his family’s last hope lay inside.
Thumbing the concealed panel aside, he quickly entered his access code. A puff of stale air brushed his face as the metal hatch squealed its protest at being asked to open. By the Endless Black Void of Space! How long had it
