About Deb Logan
Chattermaster
Blake loved to talk. He rarely closed his mouth.
He chatted with his parents over protein shakes at breakfast. He gabbed to his friends on the way to the educational unit. He whispered answers to himself when his instructor called on someone else. He even chanted in a sing-song rhythm during recess in the exercise pod.
Sometimes his happy chatter annoyed other people.
Don’t talk with food in your mouth, Blake,
Mother said at dinner one night. She spoke distinctly because the ship’s galley brimmed with colonists. Most family units ate at six bells.
But…
Father held up one finger, preventing his son’s reply.
Blake deflated. He’d only wanted to point out his mouth was empty.
It’s dinner time, Blake,
said Father. Get some food in your mouth.
Obediently, Blake bit into the replicated chicken, chewed and swallowed before opening his mouth. Mother spoke first.
Tomorrow is a big day for you, Blake,
she said, pausing to sip recycled water. Master Farmer Jaden has agreed to test you for a possible apprenticeship.
Blake’s mouth gaped, but no words came out. Master Farmer Jaden grew all the food for the Starship Generations.
