About this ebook
Lt. Nick Adams has been tasked with discovering the mysterious Zara's identity, as well as the location of her native colony. Zara, a Bug-Eye captive since early childhood, believes her homeworld to have been destroyed, but has no idea of its name or location in space. To a preschool child, it was simply "home." Will Lt. Adams be able to ferret out the information and give Zara the gift of a name and identity? Recognized as the most able analyst the USL academy has ever trained, Nick knows that if he can't accomplish the task, no one can.

Lieutenant Nick Adams strode across the carefully trimmed green lawns of the Headquarters of the Universal Star League. Located in the teeming city of New Atlantis on Earth’s North American continent, the white marble and glass edifice glistened in the morning sun. Twenty stories tall, the building’s footprint was immense, housing as it did the administrative offices of the Fleet, the Academy, and Nick’s own service, Military Intelligence.
He jogged up the wide marble steps leading to the main entrance, his leather boots beating a clean, crisp rhythm against the stone. The gleaming glass doors whooshed open at his approach and he made his way briskly to the glide that would take him to Lieutenant Commander Popescu’s office on the twelfth floor.
His superior officer had a new assignment for him, one she wouldn’t trust to the USL’s highly secure and very effective communications system. No, he’d been ordered to report in person this morning to receive a briefing on a complex and confidential assignment.
Excitement buzzed in his brain and sizzled through his blood. Adventure was afoot… and he was definitely the man for the job.
Whatever it was.
Nick had graduated top of his class from the Academy a few months earlier. He knew himself to be brilliant, insightful, and diabolically cunning. His academic record proved him to be the most able analyst USL had ever trained. Now it was up to him to prove himself in the field, which he intended to do quickly and efficiently.
After all, he was the best. If Nick Adams couldn’t see a pattern or discern a motive, then it didn’t exist.
Jumping off the glide, Nick strode across the thick, USL blue carpet, past old-fashioned oak doors set in plasteel walls disguised as dark green painted plaster panels with oak wainscoting. Stopping in front of the door labeled Lieutenant Commander Elena Popescu, Military Intelligence, Nick tugged his USL blue uniform jacket straight and
