Paul Freeman stood at the floor-to-ceiling window wall of his loft office, surveying what he thought of as his kingdom, the city skyline of Seattle. Described as a Captain of Industry by his admirers, and a rapacious shark by his detractors, Paul was a self-made man. He’d worked hard to amass the fortune that provided this stunning view, and he had every intention of accruing more.

At thirty-three, Paul was pleased with his life. Considered handsome by his social circle, with vivid blue eyes and wavy black hair, he worked out on a regular basis, determined not to let the desk and computer rob him of a lean body and healthy musculature.

A successful land developer, Paul’s business savvy had also led him to conduct a number of hostile takeovers, earning him a reputation as a corporate raider. Not that he concerned himself with what others thought of him. He knew that if he hadn’t used his vast wealth to intervene, those companies would have gone belly up, leaving their employees, and sometimes their communities, in financial ruin.

Yes, his business life gave him great satisfaction. If only the same could be said of his personal life. His wealth provided all the luxuries he could wish for, but it also robbed him of close relationships.
