    About Debbie Mumford

    1

Ah, Yellowstone! There’s no place like it.

Nature in all its glory. The scenic beauty. The mountain grandeur. The geothermal features.

What’s not to love about Yellowstone?

    Animals in their native habitats.

Tourons—tourist morons—clad in baggy shorts and flip-flops, their cameras at the ready, stalking the majestic wildlife as though they were domesticated beasts of burden in a petting zoo… and occasionally getting gored in the process.

Park rangers working tirelessly to keep both tourists and animals safe.

People are crazy, and my family was no exception.

I’d worked as a park ranger in Yellowstone for nearly a year and was anxious to show off the park’s natural beauty, so I’d invited my family to vacation here. They rented a home in Gardner, Montana, the northern gateway to the park, and I was in charge of their daily excursions. If it was a natural wonder, I was going to make sure my family experienced it.

And who exactly was this family I’d taken time off work to escort through the park?

    My parents?

Sure. Theo and Rose Knowles. The academics who’d raised me and who tried not to show their disappointment when their second son had chosen to become a lowly park ranger.

    My older brother?

Yep. The one and only Dr. Chester Knowles. My parents’ dream son. The man I’d never live
