About this ebook

Joan C Mullins was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. Moving to South Carolina
many years later, she retired to peruse her hobby of painting and venture into
writing children’s stories. For a time, Joan’s stories were tucked away in a dark
corner of a closet. Finding them and reading them all over again gave her
chuckles, as they had, once before.

“The Mystical Garden”
“The Frog and The Bee”
“The Butterfly”
“The Cemetery”
“The Drum”
“Intergalactic Surprise”
“The Cow and the Nanny Goat” (A new addition to her children’s books)

In the year 2010, two of the stories, “The Mystical Garden,” and the “Frog and
The Bee”, were produced as a Ballet. This production of the Ballet was presented
on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Two hundred children danced in this
two-day event that was also filmed. Joan also penned her story “Reflections”.
Her words of family and life. Unbelievably, on November 19, 2010, Joan’s son,
Tommy, was brutality murdered. Joan wrote about his murder. Her book is
called “The Ending”.

    WHY I WROTE THIS BOOK

I decided to write this book as many journeys happen in ones life. Passing these stories along they are my words, thoughts, and memories.

Some are children’s stories and poems that are in my story book.

    REFLECTIONS OF FUN AND NOT

Fun, as defined in Webster, Dictionary of The English Language.

That which excites merriment, frolic, sport, amusement, drollery, jocularity, a joke, frolicsome doings, also mirth, and enjoyment derived there from, synonyms under entertainment and laughter.

I was born in at Christ Hospital in Jersey City New Jersey.

The second child, I preceded a brother Ronald.

Growing up in the city was never a thought of anyplace but, my home. The Hudson Blvd. was lined with the most wonderful trees

And it took us on the road to West Side Park. Here start many memories of where my fun began

In the morning my mom would braid my hair and then put the tails on top of my head, Mom put a bobbi pin on them so they would not fall down as I ran up and down the sliding ponds steps, which took me to the bottom of the slide right into the dirt, I always just brushed the dust off and began the climb again. Next were the swings, where, I can remember learning how to pump my legs back and forth so I could go higher then any person around.

The park had a small wading pool, for; on the hot sticky days the kids would have a place to cool off. But mom would never let us join in this frolic of fun as to be able to swish water into someone’s face.

We played tag quickly running under the large fountain of water as it cascaded down in a gentle motion like a soft rain.

Mom was afraid we would contract the disease Polio.

It was hard to understand this, as all the others were having fun and all we could do was watch.

One day as I skipped passed the pool to venture onto another fun twisted metal concoction of sort never knowing where this piece would take me and after the climbs in and out of this thing I decided to try the monkey bars. I remember standing on the step reaching up for the first bar and struggling with my hands to make a connection to the next bar when some boy who would not wait for me to start fast enough for him said, will you hurry up and then with one big shove he pushed me.

Down to the ground I landing on my elbow, it shoved everything out of socket. Mom, grabbed me and started running yelling", help, please my little girl his been hurt, as she ran with me she never thought about my broken arm swinging around until I started to scream with pain. Mom then grabbed my arm and held onto it until we were able to find help.

The ambulance took us to the hospital where the Dr’s put my arm in a cast needless to say I never went on the monkey bars again.

The weeks after my recovery from the broken arm our visits to the park continued, so a different fun was to be found beside the swings and slide.

My brother and I found a large hill. Many hills were in the park and we would climb to the top of them. Dropping down on our sides we started the long roll to the bottom where we would jump up and repeat up and down we went until we got so dizzy that we could not climb anymore.

The park with it’s the strong trees had just the kind of limbs low enough for us to climb up and sit on them. I loved all the times I went to West Side Park.

Mothers Day and other events took us to the Park it was a happy time when we could celebrate, life was so simple

My cousins were a big part of my life. we were a close knit family living near each other as families did in those day’s

On weekends Mom would visit with her sisters, my brother and I looked forward going as we played with our cousins, days were so simple then as I said. It did not take much thought to have fun

We always had games of kick the can, stick ball with a hard pink ball, Hide and seek a game ‘Huckle Buckle Beanstalk’, May I, and Jumping rope, Hop Scotch, and Skating

One Halloween we went out trick and treating, we did some little mischievous things on the way.

But me I was caught letting air out of a car tire. I was caught by the owner, he gave me a good talking to me saying supposed some one was
