    About Debbie Mumford

Rafe DaNaal strode into the board room of the Futura Prime and nodded to the men and women who rose in acknowledgement of his arrival. The captain and executive officer of the luxury liner—the flagship of Rafe’s commercial fleet—wore full dress uniforms, while the other individuals sparkled in a rainbow of corporate finery. Rafe controlled the spurt of irritation at the fashion-slavery of his upper management. By the Black! The men were bedecked in more frills and spangles than the women, and the females were too lavishly decorated for his tastes.

He nodded curtly, motioned to the plush synth-leather chairs surrounding the crystalline table. Be seated. After smoothing his own well-cut but clean-lined black jacket, he rested his clasped hands on the back of the command chair.

    Captain Joran, report.

Futura Prime’s captain rose, clasped his hands behind his fusion-rod-straight back and stared past Rafe’s right shoulder. Sir. We have disengaged the Icarus drive and returned to normal space. We expect to be in orbit around Valentine I in approximately two standard days.

Rafe drew in a deep breath, and immediately regretted it. The combination of repulsively sweet fragrances worn by his corporate underlings was enough to choke a proverbial horse. He’d breathe more shallowly from here on out, or risk losing his typical breakfast of tea, toast, and a single soft-boiled egg.
