    Chapter 1

    The Last Fleet

    When the Stars Call

The deck of the battleship Vindicator hummed with a restless energy, the kind that pulsed through the steel and into the soles of those who walked its halls. In the cramped confines of the tactical room, lit by the dim glow of holographic displays and the occasional flicker of red alert lights, the air was thick with anticipation.

Adjust bearing to 2-4-0, steady as she goes, Captain Elena Marris commanded, her voice cutting through the ambient noise with the precision of a laser beam. Her eyes were fixed on the main screen, displaying the vast emptiness of space speckled with distant stars, but her mind was on the silent threats lurking beyond sensor range.

Aye, Captain, replied Lieutenant Hawkins, his fingers dancing over the control panel with practiced ease. Bearing adjusted, maintaining speed at one-third impulse.

Beside Elena, her executive officer, Commander Tycho Barrett, leaned closer to the display, squinting at the flickering icons that represented distant galaxies. We're too exposed here, Elena. If the enemy flankers are out there, we're right in their line of fire.

Elena nodded, the corner of her mouth twitching in a tight smile. "I know, Tycho, but if we can lure them out, we can take the fight on our terms. We’ve got the Spartan and the Guardian flanking us. It's now or never."

The room fell silent for a moment, the tension palpable. Suddenly, the communications officer, Ensign Carter, piped up from his station, Contact! Port side, range 30,000 kilometers, closing fast!

All hands, battle stations! Elena’s command ricocheted off the walls. The crew sprang into action, the earlier calmness transforming into a choreographed chaos.

Tycho moved to the tactical map, fingers hovering over the display. It’s the enemy scout. Looks like he’s testing our defenses.

Elena's gaze hardened. Helm, bring us about. Let’s show them we’re not just floating debris.

Bringing about, Captain. Weapons systems on standby, Lieutenant Hawkins reported, his voice calm but firm.

As the battleship pivoted gracefully in space, the gunnery officer, Sergeant Peters, called out from his station, Guns are hot, Captain. Ready to fire on your command.

Elena watched as the enemy scout ship grew larger on the screen. Hold fire. Let them come closer.

The crew exchanged tense glances, the silence again thickening. Then, with a sudden burst of static, the communications panel lit up.

"Unknown vessel, this is the UES Vindicator of the Last Fleet. You are in restricted space. Identify yourself immediately," Carter’s voice boomed through the intercom.

There was a pause, a crackle of static over the line, and then a chilling response, This is Commander Vrax of the T'Skali War Guild. You stand in the way of our conquest. Stand down or be destroyed.

Elena’s expression didn’t change. All units, prepare to engage. Fire at will.

The battleship shuddered as its main cannons roared to life, sending pulses of energy tearing through space towards the scout ship. The crew held their breath, watching as the energy beams closed the distance.

Direct hit on the enemy’s shields! Peters shouted, his voice a mix of relief and exhilaration.

Damage report? Elena asked, her voice steady.

Shields at 80%, no critical damage, Hawkins updated promptly.

Elena nodded, then turned to Tycho. "Signal the Spartan and Guardian to close in. No need to play it safe now."

Tycho nodded, relaying the commands quickly. The room buzzed with renewed vigor, the crew's movements sharp and efficient.

As the two other ships of their fleet moved into formation, closing the net around the enemy, Elena allowed herself a brief moment to watch the stars beyond the fray.
