    The wind was blowing the other way. That made the smell tolerable. It was when it blew towards us that we felt like we were in hell.

    The soldiers looked at me with barely concealed hate. But they followed orders. I knew any one of them would shoot me the first chance they got. They certainly wouldn’t come to rescue me if I ever got stuck in demon territory.

    Colonel Sanders was keeping an impassive face, though I could see he was under a lot of stress. Those were his soldiers following my idiotic orders, as he and the others no doubt felt. But Sanders was old school, kept his moustache straight and his expression aloof, though I was sure he wanted to slap me too.

    We have gone through half the bodies, sir. Though I still fail to see the purpose of the exercise.

    I was standing on a mountain of dead bodies. This wasn’t an expression or simile: It was literally a thousand dead bodies piled one on top of the other. Rotting for days in the summer heat, their smell so bad even our face masks couldn’t keep it out. At least a few of the younger soldiers couldn’t take it anymore and had to be taken away.

    At least you could tell us what we are looking for?

    I turned to him. Every time there is a demon attack, people use it as an excuse to murder. An old rich uncle who just won’t die, a wife who has grown less attractive than the secretary, a boyfriend caught with his pants down. And the bodies are dumped with the demon attacks.
