      When my favorite friend-zone girl invited me on a four-day camping trip with her, I thought this was it, we were finally going to make that leap. But then as we were coordinating gear, she made a point of suggesting separate tents.

      And I was fine with it. Truly. Yes, a little disappointed, but Amber was a great person and I wanted to keep her friendship – even if friendship was the only thing she was ever prepared to give me.

      Once I got over that initial disappointment that we would not be fucking under the stars, I started genuinely enjoying the trip. We were hiking, swimming in lakes, and cooking by camp fires. It was a damned cliché!

      Until the end of the second day, when things took a dramatic turn for the less-than-ordinary. She was trying to sling a rope over a branch to hoist our food bag where the bears wouldn’t get it, and miscalculated, and now it was stuck.

      Okay. No problem. She’s not heavy, and I work out enough that I could give her a step up without straining. Soon she was standing on my shoulders, struggling to untangle the nylon rope from the twigs. For me, that’s when it started getting weird.

      She had already taken off her hiking books for the day, so she was standing on my shoulders with her bare feet. The delicate arches curved around my shoulders like we were two puzzle pieces. Her cute little
