Lauren was sitting on the worn-out brown leather sofa that was in the centre of the living room, with her arms clutched around her knees, contemplating the direction her life was taking. Her eyes began to wander around the room and she noticed all the damp patches on the walls of her dingy council flat. It was hard to believe that she had once been a strong, independent and ambitious girl. Now, it sometimes felt as if she was trapped in her own private hell. She was ashamed about being unemployed and that her parents had to look after her kids, because she wasn’t doing a very good job of it herself. Then there was the fact her husband was in prison. It was hard to imagine that the situation would improve any time soon.

An unexpected knock at the door forced Lauren out of her reflective mood. She moved slowly towards the hallway, shuffling her slippers along the threadbare carpet. She wasn’t expecting any visitors, and it was probably someone just trying to sell her religion or something else she didn’t need. She reached the front door and opened it with caution, peering around to see who was standing there. Behind the door was a man unfamiliar to her. He was quite tall and had a sturdy figure – he definitely looked as though he could handle himself. His brown hair was shaved, giving him a thuggish look, and he had the most piercing green eyes she had ever seen.

He just stood there awkwardly, not saying a word, barely even looking at her. Finally, she decided to break the silence. Can I help you?, she uttered.

‘Umm… yes, actually. I’m Steve. She stared at him blankly. Sorry, it’s Steven… Steven Turner. She still had no idea who he was. I’m a mate of your husband’s…I just got out and he said you wouldn’t mind if I crashed here for a few nights."
