So there Robert Manning stood — and stood, and stood. Stark bollock naked. Nose pressed to the wall. Hands on his head. Welted rump throbbing painfully. Welts inflicted by the cane of Celia Smithers.

Slowly, oh-so-slowly, the minutes ticked away.

Behind him, Robert was aware of the rustle of papers as Celia Smithers continued to work unconcernedly. Occasionally a muted phone would buzz and her calm, authoritative voice would make monosyllabic replies or issue crisp orders.

"Yes… yes… no…" Click!

Don't bother me with such stupid questions. Click!

It was very obvious that Celia Smithers was an autocrat to the bone. She never excused, never explained — she simply issued orders. Orders which she knew would be obeyed without hesitation or query.

"Fire her… Yes, today." Click!

"No… no… certainly not!" Click!

Robert's back was aching. Robert's arms were aching. His nose, firmly pressed to the woodwork, was getting sore. The incessant throbbing in his buttocks continued unabated. It was worst of all over his right flank where the tip of the rod had curled and zipped in so cruelly. He wished he could curl up and try to get some relief through change of posture, relieving the aches and pains that added to his misery.

But Robert remained erect and motionless. For he dare not move. Celia Smithers had ordered him not to. And he was now in mortal dread of the woman. I am as much in her power, he thought, as any galley-slave chained to an oar was to his overseer!
