About this ebook

A Courtroom Drama Played Out in Heaven!

"We are not unaware of the devil's schemes," wrote the apostle Paul. What are they? Masquerading as an angel of righteousness, accusing the faithful, and of course being the father of lies.

Satan presents his evidence against us in the court of Heaven, summons his witnesses, and cites chapter and verse to condemn us. But we have an advocate in Heaven, our friend, our intercessor, and witness for the defence.

How will this courtroom drama play out?

With brilliant analysis and lively wit, this book takes a deep dive into Biblical truth, while drawing on great thinkers of the ages, among them Shakespeare, Benjamin Franklin, Oscar Wilde, Tolkien, and even Monty Python!

The commentary also takes a thorough look at Satan's servants in our earthly institutions of power and draws on a rich supply of anecdote to illustrate abuses of that power.

You will be entertained, enlightened, and above all, empowered by this literary and theological triumph.

    Unto

    In dedication to Christ Jesus

    You wrote no words except those traced in sand,

    Though four loyal scribes have set your speeches down,

    Nor did you need to, being the Word made flesh,

    Incarnate role, wearing thy unseen crown.

    That Word, as seed, sown in a faithful heart,

    May grow to yield the harvest you would reap,

    Receiving sunlight, rain, thy love unearned,

    'Til touching Heaven were an easy leap.

    Enthroned there, you saw Satan fall like lightning;

    The angels, saints, and elders bow to thee.

    That you would call me brother, friend, and ally,

    And more, that you would intercede for me,

    Is wonder that surpasseth understanding;

    Nothing demanded, I only believe,

    Wherein you hold my empty-handed hand;

    My only gift to thee is to receive!

    Introduction

    The devil is wont, in affliction and in the conflict of conscience, by the law to make us afraid, and to lay against us the guilt of sin… that by this means he may drive us to desperation, make us bond-slaves to himself, and pluck us from Christ.

    Martin Luther

    The Evil One… will play the ventriloquist; he'll whisper to you as if he were the voice of God. Remember, he's the accuser of the brethren.

    John Eldredge, Wild at Heart

    That gifted wordsmith and theologian, the apostle Paul, has accorded us many treasures through his epistles in the New Testament. Among the most transformational are the reminders that we are ‘slaves to righteousness’ ¹ and have ‘the mind of Christ’. ²

    But if Paul has got this right, why aren't we all just living lives of glorious freedom now, without a care in the world?

    Well, every good story needs a villain. There are many examples in the Bible, from Pharaoh to Saul to Jezebel. But rising to prominence in the New Testament, of course, is Satan, where he appears to tempt Jesus in the wilderness and ends up in a sulphurous predicament in the Book of Revelation! ³

    This character has fired the minds of myth-makers and storytellers ever since. Dante's depiction in Inferno is rather two-dimensional, but in Paradise Lost, John Milton creates a rich and complex anti-hero.

    I have also written Satan into my own epic poems,
