    Prologue

    This guidebook was meant to be written a long time ago, way before any of us knew the name COVID-19 or thought about the meaning of self-quarantine or ‘social- distance". We are all worried, these days, about having enough supplies (food, medications and toilet paper) on one hand, but also concerned about our financial situation, boredom and health. Whether we are worried about one of these issues or all, our brain health, which includes both our cognitive and mental abilities, is often not our top priority, especially during these days of uncertainty. In these eccentric times, we are less engaged in physical activities, having less cognitive stimulations, not always thinking about healthy eating and having minor social interactions. However, facts are that a healthy brain is essential for living a long and full life.

    Putting our own family of five into self-quarantine made us think that there is no better time than NOW, to publish this guide. A survey published by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that 45% of Americans felt that the coronavirus crisis is harming their cognitive and mental health (19% felt it had a major impact) [1]. Here, in this guidebook we focus on ways to boost our brain’s health, especially during these times of home quarantine.

    Times of home quarantine can be a great starting point to promote mild changes in your daily life. However, we understand during these days people want to get practical recommendations and not read another book overloaded with information that cannot be translated into very specific take-home message that
