Stell sat on the weather beaten wooden bleachers and watched Stephanie and her designated runner laugh and talk to each other on the players’ bench. This was Stephanie’s time, her game, the time she took to better herself, to move among her peers and expand her world. Stell had no reason or business to object, but she thought about jamming her wooden bokken sword between those long runner’s legs while the girl flipped her ponytail and flirted with Stephanie.

Unworthy, she said to herself. She shook herself free of such thoughts, breathing long slow breaths until she was clear and calm again. She had no reason to doubt Stephanie. The team had recruited a local track star to run for Stephanie, because her legs were too short to get around the bases fast enough. Some of the other teams objected, so Stephanie pounded the baseballs out of the Park, giving the outfielders no chance to catch them before she could make the rounds. She also taught the track star how to throw, hit, and catch so she wouldn’t be completely useless to the team. Between the two of them, the team was the first in the league. They might take the citywide trophy this year.

Stell breathed her way through the exercises a few more times. Baseball was Stephanie’s outlet. Sword practice was hers. Stephanie never objected to the time Stell spent on practice or the matches she competed in, so Stell had no business objecting to Stephanie’s competition.

We eat the girl? Chosen offered. He lay in the grass
