Bill Compton lay alone in the absolute dark on the hard splintered floor of a shipping container. He still jittered with the aftershock of being stunned and it felt like a splinter had driven into his shoulder when he fell. He wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon, not with his hands cuffed and his ankles taped together.

After a while the last of the stunner effect wore off. He rolled over and scooted himself across the floor, collecting more splinters along the way. He found the nearest wall by cracking his head on it and figured out how to slide up it, so he could at least sit up. When the general came for him, he wanted to see it.

Despite the wall’s support, the dark pressed in on him closer than his skin, making his heartbeat echo in the shipping container. The door clanked, distracting him from the mind destroying dark with a flash of fear.

Bill looked up, recoiling in pain as too bright light stabbed him right in the eyes. When he could see again, the general’s unwelcome silhouette stood before him, blocking the glare a little. He was alone, carrying a folding chair in one hand. Bill couldn’t see his face
