About this ebook
John’s down to the last day on his rent and one whole moldy sandwich to eat. To add insult to injury, somebody left a bowling ball on the kitchen table. John’s never seen it before, didn’t know how it got there, or what he’s supposed to do with it. It has to belong to somebody, and so he sets out to find out who. Maybe he’ll pick a job or something to eat along the way, too.

John glared at the bowling ball sitting on his dining room table. It wasn’t anything fancy, just the kind of plain black ball that you might find in any bowling alley, ready to play, scarred by its life of violence, the finger holes worn with use. It just sat there, like a bowling ball, having found some low spot in the tabletop to balance in so it wouldn’t roll off. If it wasn’t just a well worn bowling ball, John would have thought it was glaring back at him.
Bowling balls don’t glare. They’re things. They get thrown at bowling pins and have no other purpose in life. They have no life. They’re things. This one sat on John’s table like the shaped lump of wood and black resin that it was, smug, mute, and winning the argument with its... bowling ball-ness.
Why am I even talking to you?
He threw up his hands and stomped around, venting his frustration profanely and at length. The bowling ball just sat there, ignoring him. Why am I talking to you? You’re not the only one in the place, you know!
The bowling ball said nothing. John threw himself back into his chair, crossed his arms, and glared at the bowling ball some more. The bowling ball still said nothing.
How did he come to be
