    Josephina heard the noise first, washing dishes in the parish sink. Washing dishes was a meditative activity, where she could just let her hands and body go through the familiar motions while she thought about life, the universe, and all her social circle. Washing dishes for the parish was a giving thing to do, that benefited not just the pastor but the entire congregation.

    Strange noises were not. She raised her eyes to the window, looking out at the beaten dirt parking lot on the kitchen side of the parish. The pastor’s car stood there, though the pastor himself was not, having ridden with a parishioner to a meeting somewhere. Her car parked beside it and she thought she really ought to wash it.
