This story takes place in a world that lives in my imagination, and any coincidence to any persons – living or dead – is just that. Mere coincidence.
One may ask how anyone could not love the full moon, with all its celestial beauty. The way its soft glow charges one’s inner spirit. The feeling you get laying out in a field of grass, watching as it rises up from what appears to be the earth, pure exhilaration. But, for some of us, it means change. It means pain. It means we become…moon slaves.
- Stella McCafferty
Prologue
The night Stella had become pregnant with Ebony, it had occurred in her wolf form. An actual wolf had… well you know. Anyways, nine months later, out the enchanting latte colored child, Ebony, came. We speculated that was why she was part wolf at her birth. Luckily I was there and able to help the child, with the help of Eula’s magic. A smooth white moonstone entrapped the elements of the wolf the child had been born with. And in case we haven’t met, I am Ruth Chapman.
Stella, and Eula loved Ebony as if she were both of theirs. And in a way, I suppose, she was. She favored both of them in looks. She had Eula’s beautiful jet black curly hair, and her latte colored skin. She had her alluring almond shaped eyes, however, they were the shocking sapphire color of Stella’s. Ebony had Stella’s freckles, height, and shape. She also received the lycanthrope gene from Stella. A gene which only passed from mother to daughter. But to Ebony, Stella and Eula, she had been born to both the women.
Life was slow and easy. Days were spent by Stella and Eula doting over their new daughter. The tiny child seemed to enjoy the constant attention. Then the full moon would roll around, and I would be given charge of the young child. Eula would go with Stella and care for her as the moon rose high in the sky. Ebony and I would listen for the moment her birth mother’s transformation was complete. The bone chilling howl, would announce to us that she was a moon slave once again.
