    Eula’s Arrival

    Eula Mae Jackson was a very beautiful young girl. Eyes as dark as coffee, long black curly hair, and lips the color of a ruby. Unfortunately, she was born in a time when color mattered, and Eula had been born the wrong color.

    Eula arrived on the McCafferty plantation shortly before her sixteenth birthday. Her new home, situated in the Mississippi Delta, brought forth more than she could ever have dreamed. Me, for instance. My name is Ruth Chapman, and I work on the McCafferty plantation in the main house. Eula would come to think of me as her second mother, and I would take her under my wing and teach her all I could about our heritage. Eula would face hardships and triumphs which would create bonds so strong with those she loved that nothing could ever break them. 

    The McCafferty Plantation was noted for its kindness to slaves. So, when Eula Mae was bought for work by a slave trader named Jameson for their plantation, her family was very happy. They thought she would be given a much better life.

    The day Eula left, her Mama hugged her tight, and gave her a kiss. Eula was then sent on her way with Jameson along with two older slave women.

    After spending most of the day traveling Eula arrived on the McCafferty plantation still none the wiser about whom she had truly been purchased by or why. She assumed what the slave trader said was true, she would be a new house cook for the McCafferty’s.

    Upon her arrival, Eula and the two older female slaves were taken from the carriage down to the slaves’ cabins on the edge of the river. There a warm bath was made for her. A new dress and combs for her long hair were laid out for after her bath. Eula bathed, thinking her life had truly been changed. She couldn’t remember in all her fifteen years and eleven months receiving a brand new dress. This one made her smile. It had short puffy sleeves, and small metal covered with material matching her dress down the
