Mert McMichael lives on a small farm outside Holts Summit, Missouri, with her husband, Henry. They have been married for 54 years. They were blessed with five children and 10 grandchildren. Mert from little on had an unquenchable drive to write. For years her writings hid in a box on the top shelf of her closet. One day, Mert chased her dream and published a book called, “Learning by Heart.” She has had stories published in Woman’s World and the Catholic Missourian. A singer in Branson, Missouri, enjoyed her writings and asked her to write song lyrics for him. She has written for three different singers and has six songs recorded. The Branson Gospel Singer and Songwriter Assoc. awarded her Gospel Song of the Year 2013, New Horizons Songwriter of the Year 2013, RAA/BGSSA Number 4 in the top 10 radio hits 2013, second runner up for the Golden Pen Songwriter of the Year in 2014, Number 2 in Top Radio Hit for the Year 2014, on Music to Radio BGSSA, Golden Pen Songwriter of the Year 2015, and RAA/BGSSA Number 6th in Top Radio Hit of the Year 2015. Her latest endeavor, “Unseen Love,” is a book of short stories, some true, on how many times we pass up love. In the stories, she leads you through to see how you may be missing love.

To My Readers:
These are just words placed in this book in the order they came from my heart. I don’t have any rhyme or reason for any of the stories, just chasing the dream in my heart to write. Some have lived in my heart for many years; others just came drifting in, as I was writing this book. They are stories of life lessons I learned along the way. Some of you who read this book, know you have played an important part in my life’s journey. To my husband, I thank you for your undying love and faith in me.
My greatest hope is that you, who read the book, will carry on looking for Unseen Love in your life. We are like a song; you must sing the notes to keep it alive. We are but a ripple in the stream of life, but God has given hands and heart to each of us, to reach out and touch someone.
To all of those I passed by on my life’s journey, forgive me, for I missed so much Unseen Love.

Open your eyes to see—
Open your heart to love—
Moonlight Shadows
Moonlight dancing, leaves swaying, tender is the breeze.
Cascading shadows play in the nighttime.
As she walks, her steps are weakened by the tall grass.
Onward she goes to reach the old barn covered in decaying blight.
So little left now
Only weathered wood.
Her thoughts once bright with hope,
Dimmed like the fading red of the barn.
It’s as if only yesterday
They walked behind the barn.
Hand in hand, they lingered for a moment
Then their lips touched.
Their stolen kiss lived only here and in another time
Love was overshadowed by lives already charted
So long ago two broken hearts touched
To have a moment suspended in time.
She leans against the brittle boards
Illusions appear through the moonlight
She glimpses a vision of him
Weakened with age, she reaches out to her love.
But it is only a trembling, wrinkled hand drifting in midair
Her tears have blurred what she thought was him.
So long ago, never to see him again
So here she is alone, only a cane to lean upon.
Their love is only known… in the promise they made
Behind this moonlit barn… so long ago… in another lifetime.
Their lives went on but there was always that Unseen Love.
Always Essie’s Boy
John’s blue eyes danced with excitement when he saw the newspaper on the kitchen table. Although he was too young to read all the words, the picture of the giant striped tent surrounded by clowns and elephants could only mean one thing. He had to find Esther.
John Benjamin Cornell III was born to a prestigious family of southern roots that reached back through Louisiana’s history. His father, having left home and headed north to seek his fortune, owned and operated a prosperous factory in St. Louis. With the success of his business, he married a woman—also from a blue-blood family—and afforded her every luxury. Mrs. Cornell, who never lifted a finger to work, hired Esther when she was sixteen to help around the house. Esther had lost her mother and was happy to have somewhere to call home, regardless of what she had to endure as a result. This fact was never lost on Mrs. Cornell, who worked young Esther like a slave.
The pregnancy devastated Mrs. Cornell. She’d never wanted children and refused to bond with John when he was born. Mr. Cornell spent most of his time at the office working—and avoiding his wife’s unpleasant state. Esther, who bore the brunt of Mrs. Cornell’s misery during those nine months, took over John’s care very willingly and soon felt almost as if the cuddly baby boy was her own.
While the Cornell’s partied and traveled the world, Esther raised John. They became inseparable, and over the years John grew into a tall, handsome boy.
