    Prologue

D oc, are you telling me there is something wrong with our babies? Chazz Hernandez asked during his wife’s doctor appointment. Syreen was pregnant with twins and had just been placed on bed rest to prevent any more complications. Throughout her entire pregnancy, she was considered high risk due to her enlarged fibroids.

Yes, that is why I want to go ahead and place her in the hospital so that I can monitor the twins closely. See here? There are some developmental delays that I am seeing in baby B, he explained, pointing to the ultrasound.

Chazz dropped ten $100 bills on the table next to the doctor.

Whatever is wrong with our babies, take care of it. Money is no object. I want the best for my wife and kids.

Chazz was right; money was never an object for him. He was at the top of the food chain. His father, Sergio Hernandez, had come from Mexico ten years prior with the purest bricks of cocaine Atlanta had ever seen. He started his family’s business from the ground up, and had been untouchable ever since. Sergio only dealt with cocaine that exclusively came from Mexico. He would frequent Texas and California to meet at the underground tunnels to get his product. Most dealers wouldn’t risk the trip, but it was worth it in Sergio’s eyes. He was familiar with the tunnels, his Mexican family and besides, the Mexican product was hands down better than the watered-down stuff that came from Cuba and Haiti.

Well, I have an idea, but it will cost more than $1000, the doctor advised. Chazz pulled out a bundle of money and dropped it down on the table.

There is a lot more where that comes from. As long as you make sure my wife and children are safe, I don’t care how much it costs.

    Understood, sir.

It wasn’t even a week later that Syreen gave birth to two twins. One boy and one girl, their names were Sincere and Promise. Chazz was so excited. He fell in love with his wife all over again as he watched her nurse both of their newborn infants. Chazz found Syreen to be the most beautiful woman in the world. She was of African descent. Her skin was smooth, dark chocolate, and it glistened when the sun shined down on her. She kept her hair in long single boxed braids. Most people thought it was weave, but it was her actual hair.

Syreen carried her small frame with long legs. She was five feet seven inches tall. Chazz loved her brown doll baby eyes, small button-shaped nose, and full lips. Chazz’s father was from Mexico, but his mother, Ashaki, was also from Africa. Chazz had met Syreen in college. They both attended and graduated from Clark Atlanta. Sergio would always tell Chazz that he was not selling dope for him to grow up to be a bum. He had to go to school get an education. Sergio wanted him to learn the business outside of the streets. Chazz was glad that he listened because he found his true love.

Syreen was meek and mild. Just like Ashaki, she let her husband work and she tended to the house. Sergio’s business endeavors afforded them all a life of luxury. To hide his drug cartel, Sergio owned two car lots, ten laundromats, and six grocery stores. The drug cartel gave him his start, but the rest of his businesses were what made him rich. Now, they had more money in offshore accounts than either of them could spend in a lifetime.

The twins were the newest members of the royal family. Chazz was going to make sure his kids had the best of the best. He wanted to teach his son the business and hoped his daughter would marry someone that would be an asset to the operation. He had big dreams for his family. Unfortunately, Sincere didn’t make it. His little lungs failed and he was not able to breathe on his own. Sadly, he died three days after Syreen had given birth.

Both Chazz and Syreen were devastated. There was no amount of money that could bring their son back or take away the pain that the couple felt.

We will always honor Sincere, but we have to be strong for Promise, Chazz told Syreen.

I know honey. I am still just sad. No mother wants to ever bury her child. He didn’t even get to experience life.

But he will now be our guardian angel.

Just as he said that, the couple looked down and saw a smile appear across Promise’s face. Chazz knew that his father had built the empire, but it would be up to him to carry on the legacy. His little girl would not have a worry in the world. He was going to protect and provide for her. He was going to teach her the game and make her a powerful woman.

You are right, my love; Sincere will be our guardian angel, Syreen said as she watched her baby girl smile in her sleep.

    Promise

    20 years later…

I didn’t ask for this life. It was created for me. My father and grandfather were both my heroes. They taught me everything that I needed to know about our family business. Just because I was a girl, that didn’t mean I was given a pass to make mistakes. They ran a tight operation and I had to be just as swift as the men on the streets.

On top of that, I was still in college. My dad made sure I was receiving a proper education. So, here I was, sitting in my Business Management Class, clocking the time because I knew I had to hit the road shortly. Time was money. Today was test day. I was sure that I aced it, but the professor called me into his office after class.

Dammit! I said to myself. As I walked into the office, I checked my watch. He had exactly five minutes and fifty-three seconds to tell me what he wanted because I was on a tight schedule, and I could not risk being late.

Yes, Professor Brown? I asked as I entered the office.

Ms. Hernandez, why are you taking this class?

    Excuse me?

I think my question was clear—why are you taking this class?

Because I want to own my own business. Why are you asking me this?

You just don’t seem like you want to be here. You are the last one in and first one out the door. You ace all my tests, but never write down a single note. Never bring a book, and never show any interest in what I am saying. So, I am just wondering why are you here?

I am here getting my education like everyone else. Like you said, I ace your tests, so I am not sure what you want from me. I looked down at my watch; I had to go. Time is money, and I have to go.

I proceeded to walk out the door. I was thirty seconds behind time and had to sprint to my car. I placed a pair of Michael Kors sunglasses over my eyes and took off to the student parking lot. I was running so fast I wasn’t watching where I was going. I ran straight into Kyree Pierre, the son of Frantz Pierre. They were from Haiti. They ran shit on the Eastside of Atlanta. They mostly kept to themselves, but I knew they weren’t fucking with my familia. They wanted what we had. We had the purest product on the streets.

Kyree was fine as hell, but I knew better than to fall in love with the enemy. I had to keep my head leveled. I tried my best to ignore his smooth chocolate skin, broad shoulders, honey brown eyes, and pearl white teeth that complimented his juicy lips perfectly. He was a street boy, but you definitely couldn’t tell it here on campus. He was Ralph Lauren Polo from his fitted cap down to his loafers.

Damn baby girl, you need to be careful. I don’t want you to scuff up my shoes.

My bad, I told him and kept on running. I could feel his eyes on me, but I didn’t look back. I was running late and knew my father was gonna be on my ass if we didn’t hit the road at the exact time that I was given. When I reached the parking lot, I checked the time again and I was now a few seconds ahead of schedule. I smiled at myself. My workout schedule was now paying off.

I got into my black Lexus Coupe and sang along to Queen Bey’s Lemonade as I sped down the highway. I arrived at the warehouse and the men were still loading the van. I wiped the sweat off my head because I was in the clear. I parked my car and took my seat as the driver of the Ford E-350 van. When they were done, I was headed to New York City.

    Kyree

My dream girl ran right into me, then without a thought, she ran right past me. Now, I know I was not supposed to be in love with enemy’s daughter, but Promise was a diamond. Every man I knew wanted her, and none of them were able to touch her. From what I knew, she was still pure. I wanted to be the one to not only pop her cherry; I wanted to wife her.

Promise was everything that I needed in a woman. She was smart, and she knew the game just as good or better than me. On top of that, she looked good. She kept herself in the freshest outfits. I don’t think I’d ever seen that girl rock the same outfit twice to this day. Promise was bad, but not in a negative way. She was stacked. She was the perfect mix of African and Mexican.

Her hair was dark, full, and hung down her back. As she ran past me, her hair brushed my face. I could smell the Pantene Pro-V shampoo that was soaked into her hair. I could tell she worked out often. Her body was toned. Her legs were long, and the blue jean shorts she wore cupped her ass perfectly. My dick jumped just a little as I watched her run. I wondered where she was going in such a rush. A pretty little girl like her should have men falling at her feet. They should be on her time. If she was mine, she would never have to rush. I would be at her beck and call.

That would be in a perfect world. I knew for a fact that would probably never happen. My father and her father were enemies. My father, Frantz Pierre, was a big dope dealer. He came to Atlanta from Haiti in the late 70’s with his mother. She was the housemaid to Thomas Strong. He was a rich white man who was at the top of the drug cartel. He didn’t have any children and taught my dad everything he knew today. When Thomas died, he left my dad’s mother, my grandmother, a lot of money and his house; he left my daddy his whole empire, though.

My father didn’t grow up with much. His mother was a single woman raising a son during the 60’s and 70’s by herself. There were many nights where he didn’t have any food to eat, but thanks to Mr. Strong, those days were long gone. By the time he met my mom, he was at the top of the food chain.

My mom, Princess, was his pride and joy. She lived up to her name on my daddy’s dime. Whatever Princess wanted, she got. I, on the other hand, had to work hard. My dad didn’t give me any passes just because I was his son. I had to hustle hard and go to school, and make
