    I WALKED OUT to the beach from the wooden deck of my beach house. Well, it wasn’t just mine. I owned it with my husband, Jason, he just wasn’t here right now.

    I had made the three hour drive from our primary home yesterday, planning to spend a week or so out here by myself, enjoying the ocean and the quiet. Work had been particularly stressful lately and it was time for a break.

    Jason wouldn’t be able to make it this week. His work was keeping him at home, and, frankly, that was fine with me. I liked being by myself and needed that time periodically. Also, sometimes I just thought it was nice to have a break from each other.

    The sand was warm—but not too hot—under my feet as I stepped out onto the beach and into the late afternoon sunshine. Waves roared and crashed to shore and it was clear that the water was a little rough today. There weren’t too many people on the beach right now—several scattered groups and a few individuals. This beach was usually fairly quiet anyway.
