I HUMMED TO myself a little as I entertained a fantasy that I had been having for weeks now. Smiling to myself, I thought about the meeting I was having with my favorite group of students this afternoon. I was hoping it might turn into a bit of group fun.

Though it seemed exceptionally far-fetched.

I taught math at the local community college, and I’d been there ten years since my late twenties. Many of my students called me Ms. H—my name was Alana Hawthorne—and I had always enjoyed that comfortable rapport.

I liked my job—I did. But it was a little… familiar at this point. I had been here a decade, and I had the job down. Maybe that’s why I had been entertaining this fantasy.
