About this ebook

He’s half witch and half fire demon, although he’s all male. He’s always denied his witch half because his father was bitter about being a witch. That’s why he thought it made him weak, but when his cousin Zorth comes home to visit, he sees the strength he’s found in learning witch’s magic. Zorth doesn’t even have witch’s blood and he’s managed to become everything Yarrow hopes he can. All he needs is someone to teach him.
Zorth has never asked anything of her and she owes him more than one favor, but training a demon? What is he thinking? Wisteria finds the young demon dashing and handsome, but he’s also scary sometimes. Especially when his eyes start to glow and fire leaps from his fingertips. She’ll teach him as a beginner, but once he’s at novice level, Zorth will have to find someone else. Hopefully she can hold on to her heart for that long.

Crystal Dawn

When she’s not out hunting rogue vampires and werewolves, you can find Crystal Dawn out exploring the galaxy. She can do it all without ever leaving her computer. She kicks ass, takes names, and puts it all down for the enjoyment of her readers. At least that’s what I think she told me. Writing came as a natural outlet for her overly creative mind. She has always told stories and even written some but publishing books didn't start until 2012 with The Rebirth, was the first of the Planet Amazon books. Crystal has also been lucky to have some wonderful beta readers who keep her on track and help inspire her.Secretly, she crushes on all her sexy heroes because all her stories end happily. That is one of the things that makes writing such a joy. Knowing that it makes her reader's day a little brighter. Not that she doesn't read sad books sometimes. While still in school, she read Where the Red Fern Grows and cried like a baby. It was a wonderful book and sometimes a bit of sadness has to be put in books because that's part of life. While she reads all kinds of books at some time or another, PNR and SFR, which she writes is what she reads the most for pleasure. When she started writing, she decided on going Indie after the first two books because an author has more control. She believes Indie will compete well and continues to grow. The need to give pleasure to her readers keeps her going and she sees a long career ahead. Growing up mostly in the NW Arkansas area, it has given her a good place to set some stories and many of her characters come from there or nearby SW Missouri. The start of her stories is the easy part. Finishing them is a little harder when all the stories are in there trying to get out. She loves reading, chocolate, fine sweet wine, and traveling among a large list of pursuits. Her favorite people, after her family and close friends, are her readers who she says are some of the most wonderful people in this galaxy and the next.

    Prologue

Yarrow was stunned as he saw and heard all the things his cousin Zorth, a full-fledged demon, could do with his newly acquired witch’s magic. Their mothers were sisters, half-sisters actually. Demons being lusty creatures, half siblings were more the rule than the exception. Zorth had a quarter fire demon in him too that he rarely claimed while Yarrow had a half.

The surprising thing if you knew about his skill at witch’s magic was that Zorth had no witch’s blood while Yarrow, who couldn’t cast a spell of any kind to save his life, was half witch. That was on his father’s side. His father who had resented the witch community and told his son males never had magic and could garner no respect from the females of their kind.

It was obvious there were exceptions since Zorth was on the witches’ council and not the only male on it. That gave Yarrow hope that he too could have a life among the witches. He was tired of the demon life. He was that rare demon that wanted a settled life like Zorth had found and unlike Zorth, he wasn’t demon royalty with responsibilities that would call him back to the demon world.

Wisteria lived in a cabin in an undeveloped area around Table Rock Lake. She loved her privacy and had no need of company. Her living was made by finding and harvesting the rare herbs that grew and items that were found around the lake needed for witch’s spells or recyclable into items others value. The herbs were dried, and she ran to town once or twice a month to sell them. That’s when she picked up her supplies.

She doesn’t need or even like company, but Zorth has helped her in the past and she feels she owes him. Her only hope is that this favor of teaching his cousin magic doesn’t bite her on the ass.

    Chapter 1

    Favors Repaid

Today was a day like every other day. Wisty, as her mom called her, was just going about her business as usual. She was walking to the lake picking herbs, some were even rare ones that grew wild in the woods around this part of the lake and even on the shore near the water. Once she found all those she could, she’d drive her four-wheeler along the shore looking for odd pieces of driftwood and unique stones for artists on her list.

Her living was made from the land and the water that she lived near. She also found many treasures like fishing lures, nets, poles, pocketknives and jewelry. Her ability to find such things and find customers for them, not only supplied her with the basics, but occasionally luxury items. She was an oddity in a family of unique individuals.

It was a point of pride that in a family of strange people, she managed to be one of the strangest. There were other witches, some even on the council in her family, but none had her unique abilities. Those were rare even among witches. No one spoke of them, they knew she’d be hunted if people knew.

That was another reason she was a hermit. If no one knew her, no one would know about her. Smart, right? She slowly filled her saddlebags and the wagon she pulled behind her four-wheeler. The storm last night had left treasures littering the shore. It was like Christmas with gifts just lying there to be picked up.

She wanted a new compound bow and soon she would have one. It was tiring work and it kept her in good shape, that and her martial arts training. Most of the time it was safe around here, but danger could lurk anywhere if a girl wasn’t careful. That’s why she was extremely careful.

Now she was fully loaded and needed to head home. A second trip was on her mind when she saw a familiar shock of light blond hair and the outline of a male that resembled a Viking. Unexpected visitors rarely heralded anything good. Still, she could always count on this guy when she needed something even before he’d become family by mating a cousin.

Pulling up close to him, she parked shutting the motor off. I’d say I’m happy to see you if you didn’t bring me bad news so often. She smiled to take the hard edge off her words.

You know I love you like a sister Wisty. You call it bad news, I call it warnings so you’ll be careful. Luckily, this is not that. I came to ask for a small favor. Now Zorth’s smile almost knocked her off her feet. Damn sex demon. It didn’t relieve her worry.

    What might that be, Brother?

You know you said anytime. My cousin Yarrow wishes to learn magic. He would be your apprentice and you can work him while he is with you. Yarrow is big and strong, smart, and capable. His father is a witch. It’s in his blood although he’s never trained.

That sounds too easy for the stress I sense in you.

    He is Evan’s cousin.

Crazy Evan that once was on the council and chased Marissa even after she was mated to Damon, that Evan?

Yes, that Evan. Don’t we all have a crazy cousin?

I hope this Yarrow isn’t yours.

He’s not. I vouch for him.

I will try, but if he’s trouble, I will call, and you can take him away.

Agreed. Zorth said and he was gone in a flash and another was in his place just as quickly.

Yarrow, I would guess? My name is Wisty. Do you understand what it means to be an apprentice?

You will teach me magic and I will earn my keep?

Basically. Follow me. At least he seemed to understand things.

She led the way into her home. Opening a locked bookcase, she pulled out a beginner’s spell book. Waving her hand over it removed the things written in it when she was a learner. Here, this is a book for learners. Sit and study. I have things to do and I will be leaving after lunch. On second thought, you can help me unload my wagon and then come back inside to study.

Wisty had never had an apprentice before. Not because she couldn’t, but because she didn’t like company. Her lifestyle separated her from others. Sure, she had friends she saw regularly, but other than cousins, there were few. She let him unload the heavy items and had to admit, it eased her burden. Once the trailer was unloaded, they went inside where she made them sandwiches for lunch. After they were done and the mess cleaned up, she left to collect more treasures filling her trailer up again.

Being on the shores of the lake and zipping through the woods on her four-wheeler, relaxed Wisty and allowed her to think. She’d bought the four-wheeler after an intense job she’d done for the witch’s council where she’d tracked witch babies stolen by their father’s non-witch family. The father had given up his rights, but the family had thought the babies were white wolves and planned to sell them as such.

The babies hadn’t had a drop of white wolf blood, but Wisty still would have done the job for free. Those had been two of the most adorable twin babies she’d ever seen. Twins were showing up among the witches again as they had in the olden days. Many hoped the goddess was smiling on them once more.

Wisty’s talents lay in tracking, not that she couldn’t do other things too. She was just probably the best tracker the witches had in this world. The problem was in order not to call attention to herself, a single white wolf living in a remote location, she rarely took those types of jobs. Also her talent had only blossomed in the last two years. The youngest of ten children, she had an unusually large family for witches and even for white wolves these days.

She needed to keep her mind on her work. The perfect log was found where it had washed to the shore right on front of her. She would have to get it home carefully. She had a chain and once she got it in position she would drag it home, slowly. That made her day. It even cancelled some of the worry she had about Yarrow. Searching with more enthusiasm now, she quickly filled her trailer and her saddle bags.

Her bank account would soon swell with all the money she was about to make. She’d even found a purse. Not the kind you gave back, it only had a gun in it. She would take it by for Zorth to see in case the gun had been used in a crime. If not, she would erase its identity magically and add it to her collection. Waste not want not was something she lived by.

Even dragging the huge log, she made it back well before supper. Yarrow helped her with the big items and she took the smaller ones in to sort. Wisty had a creative bent and many items would be used around her place or made into something special before they were sold. Her talents were many, she could sew, weave, crochet, and knit. Her sketching and painting was also good. In the winter, she carved, but it was more to keep her hands busy since it wasn’t her favorite activity.

How goes the studying? She asked as she sorted her finds.

I’ve read the book, but how does it help me?
