    Introduction

    I’m a big fan of cleansing. I’ve followed dozens of cleansing diets and fasts and written several books about them. Despite the amazing benefits of these cleanses, a few weeks after completing them I noticed that I felt sluggish again. My body was no longer running at the peak performance I had felt while cleansing. What was amiss? Well, after plenty of trial and error, speaking with nutritional experts, and reviewing research, I learned the culprit was my metabolism. It had gone into starvation mode and actually slowed down thanks to my drastic cutback on calories during those cleanses.

    I discovered that in order to burn calories my body actually needed calories. It turns out that metabolism, or how fast the body burns calories, plays a key role in helping us to lose weight and keep our bodies in tip-top shape. The good news? Boosting your metabolism doesn’t have to mean intense workouts or a superstrict diet. It does mean, however, making adjustments in your daily life—and it’s so worth it.

    A quicker metabolism increases your energy throughout the day. You’ll feel better, look better, lose weight, and maintain the ability to keep that weight off. And here’s a benefit most people don’t think about: By simply increasing your metabolism, you’ll even burn calories while you’re sleeping.
