About this ebook
Marissa Adams and Mary Tilden have combined forces to produce a small collection of short stories celebrating the American holiday of Halloween. This volume is a collection of five very different tales:
1. "Mr. Rhodes's Appointment" - Being blind has Mr. Rhodes feeling down, but his therapist has unique and frightening methods to make him view life differently.
2. "Seen Through A Black Cat's Eyes" - This tale follows a very unfortunate black cat who wanders through town on Halloween night. He meets many troublemakers who make his worst nightmares come true.
3. "Back Alley Poker" - Three men playing poker in a back alley seems common enough, until one man pulls out his weapon and reveals his true reason for playing. Does everyone make it out alive?
4. "Facing Your Inner Dӕmons" - Michael thought the creature was just in his dream. But when Michael awakes, he finds an entirely different situation at hand with lessons to be learned.
5. "The Prankster and Gumballs" - Ready for a terrifying tale with a twist? The young woman in this tale wakes up on an empty airplane, but with it being airborne and no pilot in sight, she has to think fast. Authorities struggle to conclude who this unidentified woman is, but you the readers might be able to puzzle it out for them.
Marissa Adams and Mary Tilden place God first in their lives. They have, therefore, labeled these stories for mature ages, being aged 16 and up. Parents and guardians may share these stories with their children at their own discretion.

Mr. Rhodes’s Appointment
by Marissa Adams
You can go in now, Mr. Rhodes,
the secretary said.
I stood up somewhat uncertainly as they hadn’t told me where the door was.
Straight in front of you, Mr. Rhodes. I’ll get the door for you.
The secretary pushed her chair back and walked over to the door, her footsteps light on the floor. I marveled, for my feet, though in sneakers, were making loud clumping sounds each step I took.
Thanks,
I said and walked through the door.
I heard the secretary close it behind me.
Ah, Mr. Rhodes.
I assumed that it was Dr. Coleen Attaway, as that was who I was supposed to be meeting with. I felt a slight breeze, and figured that a window must be open.
Please, take a seat,
she continued. She had a smooth, Transatlantic accent.
I was surprised that she hadn’t told me where to sit, or lead me to a chair as most other doctors had.
There’s a chair in front of my desk. You can sit there.
I heard her open and close a desk drawer, seeming to take something out. I walked over and found a chair, and, assuming it was empty, took a seat. It was one of those office kinds that spin. I found the lever and adjusted the height slightly.
Now, then, Mr. Rhodes,
she said. I heard something - it sounded like something heavy and rubber being dropped on a hard floor. What seems to be your problem?
I fear what I cannot see coming.
Are you referring to future life events or the fact that you are blind?
I was surprised she stated it so bluntly. Most other doctors had tried to step around that little fact.
I am not sure,
I admitted. But I think the life events one.
I heard something sharp and metallic, then a dull clunk.
What do you think that was, Mr. Rhodes?
she asked.
What? The noise?
Assume that I nodded,
she said.
It sounded like metal and... plastic, I think.
And what do you think that metal was? And what was the plastic?
I shrugged. You were taking your nail clippers out of a plastic container,
I guessed.
She gave a dry laugh. I find it amusing that you think since I am a woman, the most logical metal object I would have is nail clippers.
I heard her scoot her chair back. No, Mr. Rhodes. This was something much more than nail clippers.
She tapped the metal object on her desk. Do you hear how it rings out when it comes into contact with wooden surfaces?
Yes,
I said slowly.
Mr. Rhodes, what if I told you that I held a knife in my hands?
Then what?
I asked.
Then nothing. Or everything. It is really up to you.
She took a step. I heard her heavy boots thudding against the cement floor.
I don’t understand—
She took another step. Mr. Rhodes, there is a woman with a knife in her hands. And you are in a room with the door closed and locked. There are no windows, and no other exits.
Another footfall, and I could hear her voice was getting closer.
My heart jumped a little. The door is locked?
Maybe.
Another step closer. Or maybe I just said that.
Two more steps and she was next to me. Then another and she was behind me. She pushed something against my throat. It felt cold and metallic, like a knife.
You can’t kill me!
I said.
No, but I can hurt you. That’s in the policy if you didn’t know.
But—
"Surely you have
