    Introduction to Sandwiches

    According to legend, when John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, wanted to be able to eat without leaving his seat at the poker table, he asked his cook to prepare a snack that he could hold in one hand – and didn’t require a knife and fork. His clever cook took some sliced meat and slapped it between two pieces of bread, and the sandwich was born.

    Sandwiches have come a long way since then, with endless ideas for fillings and breads. They can be simple or complex, cooked or uncooked, hot or cold, open-faced, man-sized, bite-sized, double-decker, triple-decker – and thousands of more possibilities.This we know for sure: Sandwiches have become an integral part of American culture, as well as globally. They are as varied as the people who eat them.Every cuisine has its great sandwiches. Sandwiches are the most versatile of foods, from a simple breakfast sandwich to a delicate and elegant tea sandwich.

    Here in America, we’ve become known as the Melting Pot, due to our rich diversity of ethnicity and respective cultures. The various regions of America are vastly different. When people came to America they brought with them their traditions and recipes. However, as they settled into their new land, or migrated further, they started to use those ingredients that were here in abundance – thus creating new cuisines and traditions. For instance, the early settlers in New England had never seen corn, but the Indians showed them how to use it. Now, corn is an essential component of New England cuisine. The Midwestern states, with their large populations of Eastern Europeans, feature a lot of pork recipes. The Southwest draws considerable influence from Mexico.

    Some Tips for Successful Sandwich Construction:

    Use good ingredients. For instance, the meat that is cut fresh at the deli counter is always better than the prepackaged stuff
