Unit 1: Future Tense

In this unit you will learn how to conjugate regular verbs in the future tense. In Spanish, verbs in their infinitive form always end with either the letters a-r, e-r, or i-r. For example, the verb mezclar means to mix, the verb comprometer means to compromise and the verb repetir means to repeat.

Even though this unit has a topic it revolves around throughout every lesson, you will be acquiring language skills that can be applied to any topic.

Lesson 1: Regular Verbs Ending In AR

In this lesson you will learn how to conjugate regular verbs ending in a-r in the future tense.

Conjugating regular verbs is easy once you get the hang of it. In Spanish all verbs have a root and a termination.

Let’s use the verb cantar which means to sing as an example.

To determine the root of the word you need to eliminate the a-r in cantar so the root of cantar is cant and the termination is a-r.

In regular verbs the root always remains the same and what changes is the termination. What this means is that depending on the pronoun used, the termination is different.

Let’s go over the verb cantar and see how it is conjugated.

Yo cantaré means I will sing. Repeat after me yo cantaré as you can see the termination for the pronoun yo is the termination aré.

Tú cantarás means you will sing. Repeat after me tú cantarás as you can see the termination for the pronoun tu is the termination ará.

Él cantará means he will sing. Repeat after me él cantará as you can see the termination for the pronoun él is the termination ará.

Ella cantará means she will sing. Repeat after me ella cantará as you can see the termination for the pronoun ella is the termination ará.

Nosotros cantaremos means we will sing. Repeat after me nosotros cantaremos as you can see the termination for the pronoun nosotros is the termination aremos.

Vosotros cantaréis means you will sing. Repeat after me vosotros cantaréis as you can see the termination for the pronoun vosotros is the termination aréis.

Ellos cantarán means they will sing. Repeat after me ellos cantarán as you can see the termination for the pronoun ellos is the termination arán.

Ellas cantarán means they will sing. Repeat after me ellas cantarán as you can see the termination for the pronoun ellas is the termination arán.

Conjugations

Now we will go over how some of these verbs are conjugated with any noun in the present tense.

The first verb we are going to conjugate is comprar which means to buy.

Yo compraré means I will buy. Repeat after me yo compraré. Let’s break it into syllables yo com-pra-ré. One more time yo compraré. And one more time yo compraré

Tú comprarás means you will buy. Repeat after me tú comprarás. Let’s break it into syllables tú com-pra-rás. One more time tú comprarás. And one more time tú comprarás

Él comprará means he will buy. Repeat after me él comprará. Let’s break it into syllables él com-pra-rá. One more time él comprará. And one more time él comprará
