You might feel as the lessons go by that this book is a little bit repetitive, but the trick to language learning lies in repetition. As a matter of fact, expert linguists have stated that in order to learn something you have to review and repeat it at least 7 times.
This book will make you repeat new words and phrases several times, it will also give you interaction exercises, so you can practice the language. It is important to note that we recommend you review to this book more than once, so you will not only learn the vocabulary but start to assimilate the language.
Unit 1: Imperfect Past Tense
In this unit you will learn how to conjugate regular verbs in the past tense. In Spanish, verbs in their infinitive form always end with the letters a-r, e-r, or i-r. For example, the verb mezclar
means to mix, the verb comprometer
means to compromise and the verb repetir
means to repeat.
In this unit we will explore the imperfect past tense. This is a verbal form that does not exist in English. In Spanish, there are two ways to talk about the past, the first one being definite or perfect past, which is the one that describes definite actions that happen and ended in a determinate time. The second way to use the past tense is the imperfect past tense, which is used to describe actions that don’t happen on a determinate moment of time.
We will clarify it with an example. A determinate action would be yesterday I played football and an indeterminate action is when I was in college, I played football. Indeterminate actions are those you can replace with used to. For example, when I was in college, I used to play football.
Even though this unit has a topic it revolves around throughout every lesson, you will be acquiring language skills that can be applied to any topic.
Lesson 1: Regular Verbs Ending In AR
In this lesson you will learn how to conjugate regular verbs ending in a-r in the imperfect past tense.
Conjugating regular verbs is easy once you get the hang of it. In Spanish all verbs have a root and a termination.
Let’s use the verb hablar
which means to speak as an example.
To determine the root of the word you need to eliminate the a-r in hablar
, so the root of hablar
is habl
and the termination is a-r
.
In regular verbs, the root always remains the same and what changes is the termination. What this means is that depending on the pronoun used, the termination is different.
Let’s go over the verb hablar
and see how it is conjugated.
Yo hablaba
means I spoke. Repeat after me yo hablaba
as you can see the termination for the pronoun yo
is the termination aba
.
Tú hablabas
means you spoke. Repeat after me tú hablabas
as you can see the termination for the pronoun tú
is the termination abas
.
Él hablaba
means he spoke. Repeat after me él hablaba
as you can see the termination for the pronoun él
is the termination aba
.
Ella hablaba
means she spoke. Repeat after me ella hablaba
as you can see the termination for the pronoun ella
is the termination aba
.
Nosotros hablábamos
means we spoke. Repeat after me nosotros hablábamos
as you can see the termination for the pronoun nosotros
is the termination ábamos
.
Vosotros hablabais
means you spoke. Repeat after me vosotros hablabais
as you can see the termination for the pronoun vosotros
is the termination abais
.
Ellos hablaban
means they spoke. Repeat after me ellos hablaban
as you can see the termination for the pronoun ellos
is the letters aban
.
Ellas hablaban
means they spoke. Repeat after me ellas hablaban
as you can see the termination for the pronoun ellas
is the
