INTRODUCTION
Have you ever wanted to travel through South America or Spain but don’t do it because you don’t speak Spanish? Most people see language learning as a scaring or daunting activity, especially adults who have probably tried to while in school and failed.
Travelling to a country without knowing the basics of that language, even when traveling sites and blogs state that everyone speaks English
, always presents risks. Therefore, it is important to be able to communicate in basic Spanish to be able to survive.
The following book is a practical and comprehensive guide to learning conversational Spanish. The focus of this book is tourism and its target audience are people who speak little or no Spanish.
This book consists of 3 units, each of them focus on a different topic needed for traveling. Their level of difficulty will increase from unit to unit, but the structure of the book will be the same. All of the units contain lessons, after all of these lessons there will be a unit review which will consist of longer interactions and exercises.
Each lesson will begin with a short introduction that will explain the usefulness and cultural significance of the lesson as well as to give the context on how to use it with examples of interactions.
Following the introduction there will be a dialogue and core of the lesson called review, at the end we will have a vocabulary review, in which we will go over the words and their meaning and repeat the learned phrases.
We understand that many adult learners find language learning difficult because they cannot pronounce certain words correctly. This is why this audiobook comes with a pronunciation section, in which we will once again go over the expressions learned and practice the pronunciation of the most difficult words, so you can be sure you sound like a fluent speaker.
Through this book we hope you learn how to have basic interactions in Spanish and have a wonderful and immersive tourism experience.
You might feel as the lessons go by that this book is a little bit repetitive, but the trick to language learning lies in repetition. As a matter of fact, expert linguists have stated that in order to learn something you have to listen and repeat it at least 7 times.
This book will make you repeat new words and phrases several times, it will also give you interaction exercises, so you can practice the language. It is important to note that we recommend you listen to this book more than once, so you will not only learn the vocabulary but start to assimilate the language.
Unit 1: Spanish Pronunciation Guide
This is probably the only technical unit on the whole book. Even though most audiobooks do not teach these lessons, in this volume we are going to dwelve into deep pronunciation lessons.
Lesson 1: Introduction To Spanish Pronunciation
In these lessons, you'll conquer Spanish pronunciation. Correct pronunciation is essential to have an immersive tourist experience, and if you have reached volume 4 we can tell you are determined to learn enough Spanish to have an authentic experience.
In this first lesson, you'll learn about the cornerstones of Spanish pronunciation so that you can learn the basics of this new language.
The English alphabet and the Spanish one use the same letters, however in spanish there is an extra letter, the ñ
. The letters containing accents are only the vowels and they do not represent another letter but guide the speaker in intonation.
But we are going to focus on the sounds, and here we go.
There are 27 consonant sounds, and 5 vowel sounds. Each symbol that you see in the pdf attachment, represents a single sound. By using these 32 sounds, you can form all the sounds needed to pronounce single word correctly in Spanish.
Still seem complicated? Well how about this: of the 27 consonant sounds in Spanish, English uses 18 of them. Therefore, since you are an English speaker then you already know how to make these sounds every day. What is more, English has more phonetic sounds that Spanish, since the vowels in English change sounds depending on their position within a word.
Right now, we will be giving you native pronunciation examples for you to imitate. This are words with sounds unique to the Spanish language and they will help you understand phonetics better. We recommend you go over this lesson more than once and for the first time just listen to the words. :
