Learn Spanish 27 Day Challenge - APOLLO S.
Introduction
Spanish has many dialects and many different accents. Depending on the Spanish speaking country, there could be remarkable differences such as the pronouns use. The pronoun TU is mostly used in Latin America. However, in countries like Uruguay and Argentina they use VOS instead. This type of difference does not make communication harder since the language is still pretty much the same and both ways of calling this pronoun are grammatically correct. Therefore, every Spanish speaking country is knowledgeable of TU and VOS functions.
Even though the accents can make a big difference at the moment of understand Spanish, this only has to do with the sound of the accent and not with the semantic part of the language. If I learn Spanish at Mexico, people at Spain will not be able to understand me? Of course, they will understand what you are saying, it is the same language properly speaking. It is just that you will adapt your way of speaking and your tone in a Mexican accent.
But, do words have different meaning depending on the country?
IT IS WELL KNOWN THAT Spanish has an important variety of words that many times it is just overwhelming. And the territorial extension on which the language goes through many times make the words develop different meanings according to the place you are at. Even though this is completely true it does not create language barrier at all. If there is a chance that a communication barrier comes up, it can be easily deluded by just asking what does certain word mean. You can even figure it out depending on the context in which you are hearing these words, so asking people for their meaning would not be a thing either. It is important to know that these differences are far from being an important percent of words and, generally speaking, it is easy to understand the other even when they use a word that means something different to you. The context of a conversation helps you to understand perfectly with the talker.
Now, we will talk a bit about a some of these words:
BRAGA. It is women's underwear in Spain (panties, depending on the country), but in Venezuela it is an entire suit, usually jeans .
Arrecho. In Venezuela, Costa Rica, Ecuador and other countries this word can have several meanings. Annoyance, for instance, but it can also mean that something is great. Though it means having a great sexual appetite in Colombia.
Coger. For most regions, this word means having sexual intercourse. But in Spain and some places within Colombia it means something more like picking up something.
Concha. This means the mollusk's shell or a fruit’s. However, this is vulgar way to refer to the female genitals in Argentina. Guagua. This means baby
in Chile. But it means bus
in Cuba and Dominican Republic.
As you can see, words variations do not represent something life changing within the same language. Around 99% of the words are the same words used by everyone who speaks Spanish. It does not matter what is the meaning of certain words you might add into your vocabulary, you will be able to communicate and hold a conversation.
Do not be afraid of Spanish!
