Introduction
We are our moods. That is a little true for some of us and very true for others. While not really wanting to sound high flown and technical and call those of us who tend to react in a rather impassioned manner when faced with emotional situations borderline personality disorder cases, the fact is that such behavior needs to be addressed and resolved.
Such people experience extraordinary swings in their emotions as for them life offers stark choices – they will either love a person excessively or dislike them with a passion – as life for them is viewed in black and white. There is no nuance or attempt to process their stimuli in a rational manner. Consequently, they seem to lurch from one crisis to another.
Unfortunately, the way such people react is not understood, no one is able to show them how to deal with their situation, not even their own families and friends.
For them, Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a godsend because it imparts the skills to deal with precisely that kind of behavior. It does so by helping such people recognize their innate strengths and develop them in a manner that makes them feel more positive about themselves and their lives.
The key essence of DBT is that it relies on cognition or using analytical thinking to get to the root of one’s seemingly irrational behavior. For instance, one will have to learn and understand that it is okay to slip up once in a while, for that’s the human thing to do. Also To learn understanding that takes a weight off a person’s mind so that they no longer come under tremendous stress on account of their far from perfect behavior.
They will also understand that people won’t detest them just because they occasionally express anger or don’t behave appropriately.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy is offered by trained therapists to their patients who learn how to substitute thoughts and behavior
