Chapter 1

The chilliness of the air of the morning is broken by bullets flying over my head and at my feet as Ella and I run through the woods outside of Lorient, France. Geakarian soldiers are on our heels. How in the world did they find my family’s cabin? They would not stop until I was captured or dead. Ever since the Geakar Empire took over France a month ago, they have been hunting down the followers of the Goddesses of the Light. Since my mom and I are Priestess, I am a prime target. That is why my family and I were hiding in the woods off the grid.

Dogs bark and their feet squish against the fallen trees and leaves. The dogs are getting closer.

I pray as I continue to run, Goddesses of the Light, please help us. Give us the strength to get to safety.

Ella says, I hope they are listening, Amelie.

I shoot balls of light that explode near the dogs. I hope it distracts them. They just ignore it and continue after us. I trip on a tree. The ground approaches fast, and I take down Ella with me.

I say to myself, "Oh Goddesses, I just got us killed."

The dogs jump into the air, but as I ready myself to die two whistles in the air explode the dogs’ heads, and their bodies fall limp. The noise of the rifle shots follows a few seconds later. Four more bullets whistle by following by the rifle fire. I could hear our pursuers body fall into the bushes of leaves. Their guns clank against the ground. I turn to look, and I see the four dead soldiers on the ground with headshots. The air in my lungs won’t come out, or I couldn’t let any in.

Ella asks, What just happen? I thought we were dead. They are dead instead.

I can breathe again. Sniper. It had to be a sniper.

Ella asks, Is that good or bad?

I say, I don’t know.

I turn to see the distant hill start to move and change into the form of a human. He is in a Ghillie suit. He places his rifle on his shoulder, facing away from us. He walks forward with the sun at his back, which
