As a kid, I remember reading the Dr. Seuss book Oh, the Places You’ll Go and thinking how cool it would be to see the world. I had always enjoyed watching National Geographic shows and movies like Indiana Jones, Coming to America, etc. It never really dawned on me that this would be a reality in my life, because like many people today, as I grew older, I lost that fascination thanks to the limiting circumstances of life.
Initially my plan was to join the military so I could get the benefit of travel…
We often hear that it’s not possible because there’s not enough money, the grass isn’t greener on the other side, or fear based thoughts like you might get caught up in something bad…
when in fact none of my family had ever traveled abroad. They relied on hearsay and stayed stuck in the familiar known.
Initially, my plan was to join the military so that I could get the benefit of travel, but life is full of unforeseen occurrences which derailed me. A week before going to bootcamp, I lost my best friend in a ridiculous brawl, due to a petty misunderstanding.
Subsequently, I became overwhelmed with depression and was hospitalised, and during that time, I re-evaluated my life and whether or not I should go. It seemed like my dream to travel would never happen.
